Good thoughts for Austin (Outdoorschik)

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

Dr DiNatale always says "try something COMPLETELY new for food" -- literally they carry such immediate bad connections with anything that made them feel 'sick' so tempt him wtih something *else*.  Don't worry if it's dog food -- what EVER you can tempt him with.

I'm glad that Austin seems to be doing a little better this evening.  We're still sending him healing vibes.

Hehe  ... in honor of Callie he ate a barbeque porkchop this evening! :) All by himself ... of course his dinner was still pureed, but a whole porkchop? that's pretty darn good :) He's still hanging in there ... I see some improvement so we are taking it day by day. He has an appointment tomorrow to get the fentanyl patch off, I'm nervous how he'll do when that's out of his system, that's the real test.

Fingers crossed that he continues to improve after the patch is off.

    Karen, how's our boy doing?

He is hanging in there. We went to the vet yesterday but at the last minute they decided to leave the fentanyl patch on one more day in case he was still getting any benefit from it. It's got to be worn off by now though and he's not significantly worse. Slightly more pain, but he's pretty alert, interested in surroundings, requesting petting, and drinking well. He hadn't pooped in three+ days, but he finally did that too. They did a lyme test last night just in case and it was negative. The plan is to extend the prednisone slightly by two days, and give him muscle relaxants for one month. We ran out of methocarbomel and they weren't getting it in til tomorrow so i really had to demand something for the night, but he got some valium (finally, quite ironic .. sigh) He's still not eatting plain old food (his kibble mixed with whatever crockpotted dog stew I have on at that moment), so I'm syringe feeding him twice a day ... really, hoppin he'll start to eat again soon. He has eatten a treat at the vet yesterday and that porkchop, so I'm hoping a meal is the next step. I made turkey and egg noodle stew this time, which he hasn't had since he got sick, so I hope it's different enough to interest him.

    Thanks for asking!

Guess what??? He ate breakfast on his own this morning!!! I gave him a big bowl of the turkey leg and egg noodle stew with a few kibbles mixed in and he lapped up the whole thing!!! Party!!!

Yipee!!  When I read your earlier post about the turkey and egg noodle stew, I was thinking I wouldn't mind some of that myself.  LOl   Great news!

HAHA ... on a funny side note, I crockpot ALL the time for my dogs, and infrequently for my boyfriend. Never fail, bf walks into the house, sniffs the air and asks, "is it for me .... or the dogs" and then gets all disappointed it's for the dogs. I think he's jealous beecause I often hear him complaining to people about the awesome things I make for the dogs, but "not him ... sniff".

The trend continues ... he demanded dinner tonight. He was so hungry he was floor surfing for crumbs so I fed him early :). I'm bit bit worried about kidney function due to all the drugs because all of a sudden the drinking has gone crazy and he's peeing everywhere, huge amounts. HIs kidney were fine on Friday ...

Good boy Austin!  I'm so happy to hear you're feeling better and eating on your own now.

Hang in there.  We're sending strong healing vibes for ya.

I'm not sure how long he's been on the pred but it will cause pretty excessive thirst and the subsequent need to pee gallons.  I've always been told not to restrict water when on pred.  I think it must be a good sign that his appetite is good.  Eat, drink and feel better, Austin. :)

Yay for Austin showing so many positive signs. Eating, drinking, moving, interested in where he is... my very best thoughts for him to continue to feel better.
