Good thoughts for Austin (Outdoorschik)

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    So glad it's not IMHA!

Oh Karen, my stomach dropped after reading your first post.

I'm so glad that it's something "simple".  We have had great luck with acupuncture for neck issues.  Fingers crossed that Austin makes a quick recovery!

No kidding ... I was feeling pretty worried with the "won't eat, won't get up, weak, pale gums" myself, even knowing it could be other things. He's hopped up on painkillers tonight and is comfy in a crate in the kitchen. Unfortunately, I've got to find a harness that fits him, because taking him out on his collar is no longer an option .. he cries out in pain, poor bugger. I made him dinner with chamomile tea (mild anti-inflammatory itself) and stew ... smart boy licked and drank around the kibbles. Oh well, at least he got something into him ... I'll take it.

Good thougths coming to Austin. I hope the combination of meds and possibly accupuncture will set him right in no time.

... it is however his neck, a pinched/disc/nerve that's causing the imbalance, weakness in his hind end. He's going to be on some heavy duty painkillers and antinflammatories... the pale gums was likely not eatting and drinking, due to pain. I asked about chiropractic, but they are advising that I wait on that until these have a chance to kick in. On the other hand, the chiropractor wanted to get him in as soon as possible, sigh

Dr. D says that with the neck the thing they seem to always forget is RELAXANTS.  That you can give tons of anti-inflammatories but until you get the pain relaxed it won't resolve.  She actually will go straight to valium (yep the holistic vet) and recommend it for several days so the body can just HEAL in sleep.

Well shoot ... I didn't think to ask for that! I'll have to see if I have any hanging around. He likes chamomile tea :) His back end is a mess because of this, the back legs are wobbly and when he tries to lean up, he winds up falling into a sit, poor guy. He's not minding the crate and I let him walk around the house a little on leash and he hasn't tried to eat my kitten or to pee :)

Poor boy....Hope you get well soon Austin.  Sounds as if mommy is taking good care of you.  Hope the pain gets taken care of...then you'll feel so much better.

Sending you some more healing vibes.

If you can find a good bowen therapist...  I'd think an accupuncturist would be better than a not-so-great chiro.  That would scare me!  I use a bowen therapist who is WONDERFUL!  Really, she does my horses but my Carmy threw her back out.  Scared me to DEATH I thought she had a bone stuck in her system!  But the vet said it was her back.  Carla did Bowen on her and Carmy LOVED it!  AND it just took some time and extra loving.

Gosh I hope Austin feels better soon.

That must be so strange for an outside sled dog to be able to come in the house to stay...so different.  Gosh you are such a good mom!

Good boy Austin !  Mind your mommy, get lots of rest and dont eat the kitty!  Still lots of vibes coming your way!  I have had a pinched nerve myself and if he feels anything like I did its not fun!

I think Austin will be better in no time. He's just got to learn to be a little careful (if that's at all possible.)

Unfortunately he's still in a ton of pain. Even on rimadyl and tramadol three times daily, he cries out while walking outside and if I put even a hair of pressure up or to the side of his head. He nearly bit me when I was trying to give him his pills yesterday and was screaming... horrible, it was the pain, he's not a biter. The vet won't give relaxants. He tolerates light rubbing and white flower oil. He's going to the chiro today at 3PM ... I realize it could make it worse but it could also make it better. The vet began baytril in case there's a bone infection. If that all doesn't work he'll x-ray. To be honest, this is no quality of life for him and he's miserable ... last night we began the talk about what we'd do if he was still in this shape next week.

I hope you can get him some relief from the pain.  I agree that is no quality of life for any dog.  Sending you good thoughts for Austin.  Did your vet say why no muscle relaxants?
