To Gracie and All Other Heart Dogs We Have Lost

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

To Gracie and All Other Heart Dogs We Have Lost

Gracie the Ancient Ridgeback, my heart dog, left for the Rainbow Bridge December 19, 2008. Today, I found the following quote, and it helped the grief. Hope it helps you too.

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

The loss of any dog is sad.  I think there needs to be a NEW word invented for the loss of a soul mate, even if "only" a four footed one.

That's a wonderful quote - thank you for sharing it.  It's definitely a comforting thought when dealing with a loss like Gracie's.  I think many of us already have a pretty big portion of "dog" in our hearts because surely that concept applies even for dogs who weren't our own.  I've loved many dogs who belonged to family and friends, and I've grieved many losses, including some right on this forum.  Even those dogs have a bit of an impact on our hearts, right?  It may be smaller since they weren't a part of our daily life, but I'll bet we've all been touched by dogs who've passed through our lives, no matter how indirectly.  And every new dog we get to know touches us again.

I know Gracie was a special girl, and I hope your heart is getting lighter each day.

I am so sorry to hear about Gracie, but I thank you for sharing the quote.  That is something we can only hope for that we will have a heart as good and pure as those wonderful dogs that have passed thru our lives.
