Duchess - JRT ?-12/26/08

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Duchess - JRT ?-12/26/08

On Christmas night my aunt's JRT, Duchess, was attacked by one of the other dog's she lives with. They called the vet and were told to go to Columbia, over an hour away. She just had superficial scratches on her neck and was having trouble breathing. My aunt was told they needed to keep her for 24 to 48 hours and if she continued to have problems breathing they would give her a tracheotomy.  My aunt and her boyfriend left Columbia at about 11 pm to head home. At 4:30 am the decision was made to put Duchess to sleep. There was too much damage to her throat.

The theory about what happened was that Duchess had a seizure(she was epileptic) and that Dixie didn't know how to react and ended up hurting Duchess by accident. The boyfriend (Dixie's owner) talked to his vet who said they would likely never have that problem with her again. My aunt has yet to make the final decision about Dixie's fate.

I am so sorry to hear about little Duchess.    Run free girl and chase all those squirrels at the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm so very sorry for your aunt's loss; run free sweet Duchess.

I hope your aunt can find a way to forgive Dixie so there won't be a second tragedy. Let us know what happens.

Amen. Run free, Duchess. And hang in there, Dixie. Sometimes, humans need some time to catch up.

    Poor Duchess.  Run free sweetie.

A similar situation happened between two of my trainers dogs.  One had a seizure and the other was thoroughly confused so he attacked.  Luckily she was right there and able to break it up with only a little damage to her own hand.  But she does use this story in her classes to help people see the benefits of crate training when you aren't around.

I hope your aunt can forgive her other dog.  He was probably just very confused about what was going on.
