I just now so your post, huskymom. I apologize for not answering sooner. Chukchi means "reindeer people." They tended herds of reigndeer and harvested fish and seal from the Bering Sea. So, yes, there would be some herding instinct in them, especially, IMHO, in a purer line. When the chukchi dogs were brought to America, they were mainly used to pull sleds. With the chukchi, they did both herding and pulling. They were also bred to be friendly, living with the families, including children.
Resources were scarce, so the breed developed, through harsh trial and error, to have a special metabolism that gains the maximum benefit out of little food. And there metabolism and appetite is hinged on exercise or work. So, the more simple the food, the better their system handles it. I think that is why Shadow had an allergic reaction to Innova. It has so much stuff in it. The food I feed him that he does best on is just lamb meal, rice, fat, and supplements.
