Poem I wrote for my dog shortly before she had to be put to sleep

"I love You and Goodbye."
Soon you will be gone.
I know it but, I can't stop it.
I want to hold you but, you slip away.
I wish for the old days to return.
You and I used to walk,swim, run, play and hug.

It's so different now, you hurt so much that I hurt too.
The indignity of it all seems unreal.
It isn't fair, it isn't right.

"Please" I used to say "just a little longer" but, time has run out.
I still love you and I still need you, yes I admit that.
The fox said you should take responsibility for what you tame, so I will.

When I was scared I called you.
You had this way of making me brave.
I just wish you could make me brave enough to let you go.

Please don't forget me when you are gone, look down on me and look after me.
Understand I love you.
Understand I couldn't see you in pain any more.
I know I will cry.
I know I will miss you.
I know that you will never really leave me.

This poem was intended to help me express my feelings for my Lady before she was put to sleep last month. If it can help anyone on here I will be glad for you to use it. As long as I am given credit for writing it. It is one of my best poems and I would love your oppinions. Did anyone else feel the same knowing they were going to lose their dog soon?

I've never lost a dog before but reading that brought tears to my eyes.

She really was a great dog! I used to rest my chin on her snout and give her a little kiss on the head...sometimes i even talked to her and just rested my chin there and held her head in my hands...es_ecially when she was older. It felt like a _erfect fit there...like I could tell all of my troubles to her. Maybe it sounds silly to think that the dog really understood me...but sometimes I felt she was the only one that did. I started to realize that I couldn't let her go on suffering so much. She was so old..and sick I think while I wrote this poem..i realized that she really did need to be put to sleep.

Thank you to everyone who took time to read this! Lady was an amazing dog. She was my best little buddy. She was very special to me and I think she is watching over my family and Bailey too!

Wow what a lovely poem, Lady is watching over you don't you worry, and she is waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge, but for now she is enjoying her time totally pain free and having a blast with all out doggie pals we have lost along the way.. run free Lady !! xxx

Aww thank you everyone. I am glad you liked what I wrote. I really debated if I wanted to post something very emotional like that. Everyone here seemed so nice...and so I wanted to post it. I am very glad to see you think Lady could understand me. Maybe they all can understand us when we talk to them...and then again maybe they don't even need to hear the words to understand.

Yes... the expectation, knowing it's going to happen is horrible. Your poem was very good... very touching. And I know your Lady understood every word you said to her.

Different people express similar things in different ways. I am comforted by a chukchi proverb. How you treat your dogs determines your trip to heaven after your life. If you have been good to them, they await to pull your sled to heaven, which in my case, would be the Rainbow Bridge.

he he he that might might be a slight problem for Lady. At most she might have been 25 lbs (i doubt she ever got that large even) I am not a light weight! Kidding kidding. Again I am realy glad people have commented on the poem.
