Ahhhhhh -- Foxy and Muffin the Intrepid AND Ms Socks -- all 3 of them have had raggit buddies and with Tonka that makes 4 -- so those bunnies will have a grand tour of the Bridge.
One day several years ago my husband came in one Sunday morning with a grin as wide as the sea and said "You should see what's living under OUR hedge!!"
It was a black and white lop-eared bunny. VERY domesticated. We took a picture and put up posters straight away and it happened to belong to our neighbor out back. I'd been calling her Mrs. Pepper (as in salt and ...) and had kept her in my bathtub with timothy and water, etc. and this gal told me quite seriously that BUBBLES was a **BOY**.
I didn't say much -- I can usually kinda sense the male/female issue but hey - it was HER rabbit. At the time I was trying to convince her to neuter him -- particularly since he was apparently a Houdini.
About 6 months later I got this panicked call. Her new roommate had a boy bunny and they'd been keeping them together in an outdoor hutch. (yes, I was cringing and you all have this figured already, right??)
"Bubbles and my roomie's bunny are tearing their fur out and .... and ... there's this blob of STUFF in the back of his hutch -- and my roommate's bunny has this funny thing hanging down"
We arrived to find MRS. PEPPER (emphasis on the MRS) and HER BOYFRIEND in their hutch. sheesh. The 'blob' was a baby who hadn't made it and much to my neighbor's horror there were EIGHT baby bunnies on the ground who had fallen thru the slats of the hutch.
A friend of mine does rabbit rescue -- we got a recipe for temporary formula til we could get Mrs. Pepper ... a/k/a Bubbles to nurse (the 'hanging down' thing on the male was the predictable and operative part of a male rabbit whose fatherly instincts and testosterone are running rampant and my neighbor finally decided that yep, maybe Bubbles WAS a girl!!!) Only 2 of them survived. But I had the experience of a lifetime gettng to handfeed these babies and learning all about rabbits and their babies.
I'm terribly allergic to them or I'd have some. A rabbit can be an incredible pet -- they are SOOOO trainable (they can be leash trained and litter trained) and incredibly intelligent. I can imagine your friends are totally devastated. The bond with a rabbit can be equal to that of a dog or cat (or more so actually).
But of course we expect our dogs to learn to be ok with other animals and not to 'chase' wild-life. So Foxy, Muffin and Ms. Socks knew rabbits could be special friends. I'd never leave a dog alone with a rabbit on this side of Rainbow Bridge -- play can end badly because a rabbit can kick to beat the band and those teeth of theirs can be a big deal and if it's got fur it's also got a temper!! But beyond the Bridge -- I can just imagine the Mostlie Sheltie 'herding' them all to the right place in the Meadow to find the sweetest grass!!
