Special bunnies at the Bridge

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Special bunnies at the Bridge

My husband's coworker had a terrible loss yesterday - there was a fire at their house and their 4 bunnies died.  Fortunately, a neighbor called the fire department (both the husband and wife were at work), so the property damage was contained to a small area.  Obviously, they don't care about the house at all.  They're devastated about their pets.

My heart is broken for the wife - I know this is unbearable for her.  When Tonka died, we exchanged stories about our grief processes, and like me, her pets are her children.  I can't imagine her agony.  Talk about guilt, regret, what-ifs, etc.

I'll ask Tonka to look for 4 special bunnies today, and to keep them safe as they meet all the other critters at the Bridge.  He'll find them a secure place to hang out where they can meet other bunnies but not be afraid of the other animals.  Sweet bunnies - you'll be greatly missed.  [sm=angel.gif]

What a devastating loss for your friends; I am so, so sorry to hear of it.  I know their hearts are breaking at the loss of their little wiggle nose fur babies.  My heart goes out to them...

Wishing them comfort and ease to their grief and peace for the little bunnies.

I'm so sad to hear of this; I have bunnies too and the ones I've lost - Kasper, Clifford and Ceasar - will show these four around the Parsley Fields at the Bridge until their people can come to meet them.

How awful!  I'm so sorry for your friend's loss.  Like most of us, we think of and treat our pets as our children.  I often worry about the same thing happening while I'm away from home.  I hope Tonka showed them the way and is taking good care of them.  They are in my thoughts & prayers as they go thru this difficult time.

Ahhhhhh -- Foxy and Muffin the Intrepid AND Ms Socks -- all 3 of them have had raggit buddies and with Tonka that makes 4 -- so those bunnies will have a grand tour of the Bridge.

One day several years ago my husband came in one Sunday morning with a grin as wide as the sea and said "You should see what's living under OUR hedge!!"

It was a black and white lop-eared bunny.  VERY domesticated.  We took a picture and put up posters straight away and it happened to belong to our neighbor out back.  I'd been calling her Mrs. Pepper (as in salt and ...) and had kept her in my bathtub with timothy and water, etc.  and this gal told me quite seriously that BUBBLES was a **BOY**.

I didn't say much -- I can usually kinda sense the male/female issue but hey - it was HER rabbit.  At the time I was trying to convince her to neuter him -- particularly since he was apparently a Houdini.

About 6 months later I got this panicked call.  Her new roommate had a boy bunny and they'd been keeping them together in an outdoor hutch.  (yes, I was cringing and you all have this figured already, right??)

"Bubbles and my roomie's bunny are tearing their fur out and .... and ... there's this blob of STUFF in the back of his hutch -- and my roommate's bunny has this funny thing hanging down"

We arrived to find MRS. PEPPER (emphasis on the MRS) and HER BOYFRIEND in their hutch.  sheesh.  The 'blob' was a baby who hadn't made it and much to my neighbor's horror there were EIGHT baby bunnies on the ground who had fallen thru the slats of the hutch.

A friend of mine does rabbit rescue -- we got a recipe for temporary formula til we could get Mrs. Pepper ... a/k/a Bubbles to nurse (the 'hanging down' thing on the male was the predictable and operative part of a male rabbit whose fatherly instincts and testosterone are running rampant and my neighbor finally decided that yep, maybe Bubbles WAS a girl!!!)  Only 2 of them survived.  But I had the experience of a lifetime gettng to handfeed these babies and learning all about rabbits and their babies.

I'm terribly allergic to them or I'd have some.  A rabbit can be an incredible pet -- they are SOOOO trainable (they can be leash trained and litter trained) and incredibly intelligent.  I can imagine your friends are totally devastated.  The bond with a rabbit can be equal to that of a dog or cat (or more so actually).

But of course we expect our dogs to learn to be ok with other animals and not to 'chase' wild-life.  So Foxy, Muffin and Ms. Socks knew rabbits could be special friends.  I'd never leave a dog alone with a rabbit on this side of Rainbow Bridge -- play can end badly because a rabbit can kick to beat the band and those teeth of theirs can be a big deal and if it's got fur it's also got a temper!!  But beyond the Bridge -- I can just imagine the Mostlie Sheltie 'herding' them all to the right place in the Meadow to find the sweetest grass!!

Thanks for all your kind words everyone.  DH tells me that the husband is back at work, but they're living with family while their house is repaired.  I guess the damage was more than initially thought.  Even though flames were only in one room, the smoke and water damage was severe.  DH started a collection at his office for people to contribute cash or gift cards so the couple can have some dinners out and/or buy replacement stuff for their house.  Other than some brief exchanges about that, DH says he (his coworker) doesn't talk about it, and being a shop of almost all men, no one is in the "vibe" of sharing ongoing, detailed verbal support.  Even though I probably won't see the couple until the next office function, I think about them and the wee bunnies often.

Callie, your story about your neighbors' rabbit situation is amazing.  Why would someone NOT make sure about the sex of a pair of animals before housing them together?  I mean, the old saying about "reproducing like rabbits" isn't just a funny phrase.  Geesh, you'd think they would've been concerned about the possibility!  But, as we all know, some people are a bit clueless sometimes![8|]

I'm glad to know there are some other pups at the Bridge who are bunny-friendly.  It's nice to know some special dogs are keeping an eye out for these quiet and gentle little critters!

My darling bun, Kat, is there, too. She was PTS after contracting myxomatosis while I was overseas. She was a special little girl and I miss her still. She died before she was even a year old.

Deepest sympathies to your friends. I can only imagine what they would be going through.
