Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    A few days ago I posted a photo thread with pictures of dogs from the shelter that I walked with in the Memorial Day Parade.  One was a very special 10 year old hound mix named Bogart.  Well, I am sad to say he has crossed over the bridge.  He was found in the morning in his kennel with bloat.  The vet techs did what they could but in the end they had to let him go.  It is hard working in a shelter to not make attachments to these dogs but he was truly a wonderful dog who never deserved to end this way.  His owners divorced and he was caught in the middle with a sad outcome.  He marched his last parade but there will be many more for him over the bridge.  March on young Bogart, it was an honor to know you.

    Bogart -- there's a little English cocker spanYELL (I can't type that without tears) in the Meadow and he'll think you're Luna's cousin and treat you really well.  In fact, apparently now at certain times it "sprinkles" tennis balls up there, and Billy's good at sharing.  I guess it doesn't really 'rain' tennis balls (that might hurt) but at certain times suddenly a few tennis balls just seem to fall out of nowhere!  And of course they MUST be chased.

    Bogart -- Billy will understand more than you'd know ... and he'll introduce you to the whole family (the I-Dog family and more!)

    Have fun, Bogart -- you CAN now.  And never be abandoned again.

    Yesterday was probably the saddest day for me at the shelter so far.  To see sweet Bogart in such pain was just heartbreaking.

    I'm so sorry to see that Bogart has died.  He sure deserved better but that's true of so many dogs that end up discarded for one reason or another.  Bogart, you did have some people who cared about you and let you strut your stuff.  Run free, Bogart.

    Bogart, I am so happy that you got to March in the parade and that 2 of our IDog family were there to show you love.  They told us all about you so our furr babies will be waiting to greet you and show you what fun you can have when you cross over the bridge.

    Thank you all for being so caring for a dog who many of you only got a glimps of.  It makes me smile to see the whole I-dog family so connected in this way.  

    I can still hear Bogart's houndish howl ringing in my ears when I think of him.  Today, while cleaning, I stumbled upon his collar in the surgery room.  It made me wonder how this one dog could have such an impact on me when there are thousands of dogs I work with each year.  I only knew him for a few weeks but he reminded me of why I do what I do.

    A friend of mine who is an animal communicator once told me that she saw many dogs around me, and that they weren't all mine.  Now I know what she meant.  You touch a lot of dogs, and the one thing this dog got from you was pure love, and he knew it.  Perhaps that's why he could finally go - he may have wanted YOU to be the human who reaches for him when you get to the Bridge.  Otherwise, it may have been someone who let him go on this earth not knowing what fate would befall him.  Dogs will old souls know so much.  Run free parade dog!
