Disappearing Stars - Rating System a Sham

Does anyone pay attention to the star ratings here?

    No

    I don't either.

I don't think it is working right. Earlier today I rated it 5 stars and before doing so it stated that it was rated 4 out of 5, I looked just now and the level went down to 3. something out of 5, shouldnt it have gone up?

I have occasionally seen the stars and wondered why some had stars and some did not, so I really didn't know how they got rated.  I just read a thread if it was of interest to me.  The stars did not matter and I rarely even noticed them. I also think the stars are subjective.

When are ya'll going to realize that I am the one true star? Devil

I *think* but I could be wrong that where you hover your mouse when you click determines the rating being given. When you hover your mouse over the stars, it will light up the stars up to that point and show either "excellent" for 5 or "good" if you move to the fourth star and so on. So which one your mouse is pointing to is how many stars you are rating the thread with. It took me a few times looking at it to come to that conclusion, so the system does seem to be abit confusing for *my* muddled brain. It's possible that people aren't intentionally giving threads low ratings, but that they simply are clicking the button at any place on it reather than clicking the 5th star.

A good thread stands on its own regardless of stars. When I was in kindergarten, I took my gold stars very seriously. Now, external forms of validation like that aren't nearly as important to me. What *does* make me feel good is if someone comments positively about something I shared - either finding it interesting, thought-provoking, or helpful. And that doesn't correspond to "agreement," and you can't really use stars for that. Smile

    This is ridiculous.

One, who cares about stars? Is this worth a thread to complain about? You track and count stars?

Two, maybe just maybe the threads you think are worth five stars aren't five star worthy in other people's eyes? Why does there have to be a conspiracy? Maybe there is, maybe there isn't, but there are alternative explanations.

I don't pay attention to stars. I've never rated a post, nor will I. But if I had to rate most of the clicker threads I've seen, no I wouldn't be handing out a five star rating and last time I checked I'm not a part of any underground "Let's get SD and her friends" movement.

SD, you seem to be looking for fights. Even if someone is intentionally giving clicker posts low ratings for the thrill of it, let it go. Stop looking for insults. You have a great amount of technical knowledge, and can be of great help to people. I admire that. I don't admire the way, in my opinion, you look for drama. Trolls and unpleasant people will pick on those they can get a reaction from. If you believe you are being targeted, stop rewarding those behaviors by reacting.

I hope I haven't violated any rules with my post. If I've been too harsh or attacking, I will gladly edit and apologize. I am frustrated, but don't mean to personally attack SD.

Looks like you just gave ME a rating of "no stars".  Sorry, but I posted this because it occurred to me that some people on the forum were being a bit "small" about this, and perhaps ruining what might have been a useful tool in the hands of mature people to signify threads with valuable information, or good discussions.  When I think something, I generally post for all to see, and I don't look for drama.  But, it sure has a way of surfacing.  If you compare my OP with your post about me, who is creating drama?  If you don't mean to personally attack anyone, then don't.  Do what I did and make it anonymous.

You made a reference to anonymous people having no guts, engaging in games, and claimed that the entire rating system is a sham because clicker threads don't stay at 5 star ratings.

I firmly told you, in a forthright manner, that I think this thread is ridiculous. I won't play games or be coy. I don't insult people in ways that can slip under the radar. I may overstep and say things that are too harsh, but rest assured what you see is what you get.

I think your comment that I gave you no stars was a joke? I don't understand what you mean exactly. I hope you are not suggesting I actually rated a thread of yours.

I don't see how giving a thread a low rating is makes the tool any less (or more) valuable. It is still an opinion of whoever rated the thread, and I make my own decision when I look at the thread. I never paid any attention to the stars until this thread began. But if the tool is used for what it's intended, than a rating of one star or a rating of five stars would still make the tool what it is. A way for mature people to signify threads with valuable information, with invaluable information, with anything in between.

Why can't it occur to you that people are using this tool correctly.  I was very interested in a nutrition thread but the thread's OP was somewhat disassociated with the contents.  The contents were excellent but there was confusion amongs participants that caused the OP to clarify.  The rating stars was used and as the thread was further clarified, the lesser rating it got.  I felt the star rating was working as it intended.

    Moderator speaking.

The personal stuff is done. Now. Move along...the issue of stars is fine to discuss...but the personal stuff is not fit for anything but PM.

Drama indeed...that aspect of this thread, ends now.

Actually, no, I was not insinuating that.  I meant that you gave me a "no stars" rating in your post. Wink   And, I have no problem with you saying that you think the thread is ridiculous.  It's only if you said *I* am ridiculous that it gets personal. Smile

Cool! Thank you for the clarification. I'm still learning to read your humor.

*bats eyes at rw so she ignores that we're still talking about each other, to each other*

    We're being nice! Really!
