What's the stop down rate and speed of the lens? How exciting, that would be a very versatile lens indeed! Huge range. You can also buy macro filters which is kinda like "the poor mans" macro lens. You affix it to the end of your lens and you can take close ups of stuff that way. Word to the wise, though, make sure you never use your AF when using those filters, it'll mess up your AF. So, you just need to find out what diameter your lens is and you can pick them up for relatively cheap $50 for a set of different sizes (+1, +2, +3, +5 and +10) Using the +1 will give you really nice quality portrait work. This is also a cheap way to find out if you even like macro photgraphy. I did, so I ended up buying a macro lens... which I use probably more often than any other lens. That and my wide angle are the most used, for sure. You can also buy other filters taht are fun and a cheap way to get different results :)
Yay for phtogoraphy!! I can't wait to see all the great shots you get with your new lens!
You should check out www.betterphoto.com you should check it out, great photography there, I learned a lot just by looking through the contest winners and attempting to emulate their work. You can also take classes, which I found were really quite good.
