Approving new IDs, restricting badguys

So, Lani, I know we've had members in the past get kicked out, then try to come back under different id's. Considering we can use made up e-mail addresses here, how do you identify this type of person? There's a new user with the id dog1234567, and an email dupuy(somethingorother), which I realize was not DPU's email, but it made me think of him.

Also, did you get your moderator's gift certificate yet? Just curious.

I think you compare the isp address - but I don't know where you would find DPU's since they are gone. How are you keeping track of new members - or are you just doing it manually?

funny you should mention the gift certificate I was just thinking that it should be here and I want to use it for secret santa - perhaps an email to Laurissa will give us an idea when it will arrive

As for the GCs, I got mine back on September 16th from Lydia Keefer. (I'm using it for Secret Santa, too - it's the only reason I could sign up this year, since I'm broke.) Did we settle on once quarterly? Then it would be coming again in December, I guess.

I used the first one to buy the ex-pen for Bugsy - since the other one was 9/16 we should get the next one this week I guess. fingers crossed. The person I got for SS was the person that was SS for us last year and they spent a ton on Bugsy I would like to do a great job for them and money is very tight here too - B's surgery, flights to the UK, funerals etc. The GC would help tremendously

on an aside what did you think of Glenda's abuse report - I really don't know if it is OK or not

I saw it, and since there was another thread they started specifically on pet insurance, where they included links, as did others, and the user ended the thread with "Thanks for the input, I'll look into getting the best/right insurance" - or something like that, I took it as general interest rather than an advert. Why the rest of these people come down on the "how much do you spend" thread, as opposed to the one specifically about pet insurance is beyond me.... maybe it's because Amanda posted in that thread and they're afraid of her. lol

Well, I don't see ISP on the users awaiting approval - the only time I've seen a user's isp is when they make a post.

How are you keeping track of new members - or are you just doing it manually?

You can go to Membership, and filter the results for users created after a certain date. I look at all those users and see who has posted. I review their posts and their profiles. For the users who haven't posted, I pick which ones I want to investigate their profiles - even semi-suspicious usernames, those that completely match their gmail accounts (hmm, really?).... but I don't know what Laurissa meant about scrubbing our lists - ie, I don't know if we're letting in people who make no posts, don't advertise, but are still grabbing our members' info (and what sort of info, I don't know.)

Once Laurissa settles the blog issue, I'll dig in further. I'm choosing the blogs as my first battle before I start chasing tails on who could potentially do harm of an unknown sort. lol

FYI, don't approve any id's with pid in the email address - they appear to be tracking.

Also, don't approve anyone w/an email address ending in nikeenjoy.com - it's shopping links - I found them all over other forums.

Edit to add, I'm watching PetPoms, because I am aware they have their own website. Doesn't necessarily mean they shouldn't have access to the forum for questions, etc, but.... I've tentatively approved them. As soon as they start to set up their ID, I will send them a pre-emptive warning not to post links to their own website... but be aware, mkay?

oh, totally unrelated, but.... did you know you can type "shitty" and the forum doesn't edit it? lol I had to stealth-edit someone to avoid an issue.
