Huskies are intelligent with an independent streak. They are known to forget training when it suits them. They have the innate desire to run 30 mph for ten minutes or more. They are rank-oriented and have to be shown who is alpha. They were not bred for recall and hunting, they were bred to pull hard and run fast on little food in the coldest conditions on the planet. They are good around people and make lousy guard dogs. Because they are rank-oriented they can get confused around children who are getting as much attention as they are, but I have not found this to be the case, so far. Then, again, I am alpha and he knows it. So, he may not play fetch as naturally as a lab and sometimes he want's to ignore me if something else holds his attention more. But that also can be corrected with proper training and understanding of dog interaction. For example, if in a confrontation with another dog that is loose, put yourself between your dog and the other dog. This shows your status as alpha to both your dog and the other dog. This is easier said than done. When the other dog is running circles and trying to find a way in, there's not much you can do.
On the other hand, in the bite statistics, labs have bitten way more than pit bulls have bitten. Shadow's temperment is primarily husky and he will lick and kiss the cat that jumps the fence from next door. Does that sound like a mean dog?
