Opinions about Border Collie

I'm posting this over here as well in case you aren't looking at the other thread - my opinion, as someone who has been doing BC rescue for ten years and trains them professionally now:

The life you describe would be wonderful for the vast majority of smooth-coated, black or brown, lab or hound type mixes in the shelter.  Most dogs will adjust their needs to what is asked of them and are perfectly capable of a daily run on the beach or whatever suits you.  You don't need a super-athlete to keep up with that - it's kind of like getting a NASCAR stockcar to drive to the grocery store - way too much for your needs.  You just have to start go meeting dogs and see what you think.  There's so many nice totally unidentifiable medium-sized, smooth coated dogs who need homes and would love a moderately active lifestyle such as you describe.

Good luck on your search for a dog.  I am very glad to see you are considering offering a home to a homeless rescue, whatever breed or mix you end up with!! [:)]

Yes I did see that awhile ago. hehe I somewhat found a BC already, but I'm not sure if she is a Smooth-coated, but she is tricolour. I don't know if she a Lab or Hound type. The pic of the dog is on one of the adoption website, which I do not have permission to post it elsewhere. (I can Pm though, if someone would like to help me identify what kind of BC she is.)
    Thanks!

You can post a link - if it it on the web it is free game, unless it is some kind of password protected thing, in which case it won't let any of us view it anyway.

The best advice I've ever read about choosing a dog, and I'm paraphrasing, is don't get a dog with the idea that you're going to START running, jogging, hiking, etc. - get a dog because right now you _____________ (hang out at home, jog every morning, whatever) and would like a dog to be there with you when you do. Remember, this dog is going to be with you probably for at least 10 years, so you have to be realistic about how active you're going to be after the honeymoon is over. Sure, I'm more active now that I have a dog - I go for walks every day that I never did before and I go hiking once in a while - but to a dog that's not a lot of exercise at all, so I did not get a high energy dog.

Also, a note on dog size - I don't think the size of your home has too much bearing on the size of dog you get. I mean, I wouldn't get a Saint Bernard if you have a studio apartment. But we all exercise our dogs outdoors - most of the time while indoors a dog is (hopefully) just hanging out, not racing from room to room. Big dogs can live in smaller homes as long as they are exercised adequately.

Oh, and from her photo I'd say the dog you're interested in looks like a purebred BC to me.

She looks pretty purebred from that picture - the way she's sitting.  If she turns out to be purebred, are you ready for that?  If the only thing that will keep her from tearing up your house is herding lessons, can you do that?
