    "Large" daschunds-Still exist?

Just curious but when I was young, about 40 years ago, a neighbor had a group of rough coated daschunds that stood about 12-14 inches at the shoulder and looked like they weighed in at about 30-35 pounds. He used them for hunting and they were "hard" little dogs, very tough and scrappy but still good to people and I liked them a lot! I've been looking for a couple of years now for similar dogs but all I've found are really small doxies, heaviest being in the 20lb area and nothing like the ones I remember, so that's my question: Do large doxies still exist or have they been bred down to 20lb and unders or am I just crazy and am remembering something that never existed?

There are two sizes of Dachshund. . standard and miniature.

Most people have minis. . they weigh 11 lbs and under
Standards can be up to 32 lbs.

i remember doxies being larger too.... but all i see are minis. the guy next door has a mini.. our friends have a mini, the lady down the road has a mini, all i see for sale in the paper are minis...

the above link is of an antique print of hunting with doxies... i would love to have it lol i love old time art, especially with dog themes [:D]
http://www.huntingdachshund.com/ - an actual hunting focussed kennel breeding German/Sweedish hunting lines

now there IS another breed in Europe.. called a Drever. they fit your description being about 12 1/2 -15 inches, females slightly smaller. they look like someone stuck parts of different breeds together... short Corgi legs, hound coat, and head, the ears are like a lab's.. they can be any hound colour as long as they have white.. ok it looks like a doxie mated with a beagle...

there are two likely things that might have factored in to his dogs..
one.. he out crossed with some other breed to make a sturdy tenacious hunting dog. might have been his own creation.
two.. working blood lines are NOTHING like show blood lines.. this goes for many breeds..

Standard size doxies still exist, but aren't as popular as they once were. That was MIL's breed of choice.

Thanks all! I spoke with my older sister, who has a much better memory than me and she remembered them well too and remembered more facts about the family and the dogs also, she even recalled some of the names, Schatzi, Donder, Tundor and Frey. Seems the neighbors parents were German and brought several dogs with them when they came to the US, so they were apparently German hunting stock. It's a shame that size has declined so much, these were great looking dogs and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a pack of them.

My uncle used to have a little pack of standard Dachshunds that he supposedly imported (if my and my mom's memory serve.... it was 20 yrs ago and I was very young). They were good-sized dogs and lots of fun. Certainly different from my mini Dachshund, who is Lap Dog Extraordinaire. You could possibly find some nice standards by going to dog shows and talking to Doxie people. The only thing I've seen at shows have been smaller standards (20 lbs or so) and minis (under 11 lbs), but the folks there may know of someone who has larger end standards.

The big standards are out there too- there was a very nice substantial wirehair boy at our last rally trial who was nearly as big as my Cardi!

Oh yeah.  My parents have a 35lb doxie.  Other than at the breeders he's the biggest dachshund I've seen.  And if I remember right his sire was even bigger than he is.

Here is his rainbow bridge page.  The black and tan female is a sibling of their doxie.  He looks exactly like that.  I think her dogs are absoluetely gorgeous.  They have almost a collie head.  But I think I might be a little biased.

if you check out thehuntinglife.com you will find people that use wirehaired standard doxies for hunting.. usually tracking wounded deer and hunting rabbits, among other things. they have a special name for them, which i cant recal. but if you do a search for Daschund, you will find the info you need. i'm a member of their forum, and i only joined because the really interesting places are for members only.... so i dont know if you have to be a member to do a search or not.
these guys are serious about their working dogs, just to forewarn. they dont like "pets" very much, but i am sue you will find someone there that will have more info on true working doxies. lol

Thanks for all the research! I've just signed up for the hunting life, just have to wait for confirmation. The teckel club follows FCI conformation which limits dogs to a maximum of 9 kgs, still smaller than I would like. I've got a few e-mails and phone calls in to other places and am waiting for returns. Seems like I've gone off on another of my infamous quests.

now you sound like me lol
and that forum was fairly quick with accepting me, i dont know if its automatic or not.. some forums are and some arent. but it SEEMED pretty quick. but then again i'm not known to keep track of time lol

just out of curiosity, do you plan to hunt with these dogs if you get them? i'm a huge supporter of people who own working breeds that actually do something with them. i think it would be cool to restore the doxie back to what he once was...
dont know if you've seen the cartoon/CGI movie "Open Season".. but there is a doxie in it that is kinda funny. his owners pamper him but he still keeps his fierce big bad dog attitude through it all [:D]

I was hoping to do some rabbit and small game with them but mostly hunt trials and home made tunnel work* but I'm having absolutely no luck with finding ANYBODY working anything but teckels. Found two people breeding standards through the AKC but they have no interest in selling pups for anything but the showring.

The hunting life website is great, thanks for it. A really different perspective than you get on here. Funny, I never thought of English as a foreign language until I went on there.

    * I have access to medium diameter concrete and PVC piping and landscape equipment and was thinking of building a tunneling course. I might still go forward with that and work with a different dog. I've got a friend that has Patterdales and might go that route.

The breeder we got our dachshund from shows and used to compete in earth dog (don't know if she still does).  Don't know what coat variety you are looking for.  She just had smooth and long haired.  She might have something you are looking for, or maybe could help point you in the right direction.

Edited to add:  This is what she says on her site
Are you looking to add a standard smooth or longhair dachshund to your family?  Whether you are looking for a family pet puppy, or an older adult, or a dog to show or with which to do performance events, I may be able to help you.  I know a lot of people in the dachshund world, and if I can't help you personally, I can find someone who can help you find your dream dog.
