I don't have any knowledge of either breed, nor any good recomendations on small to medium breeds that are good in apartments. I have great apartment dogs, but greyhounds are large.. so probably not what you are looking for.

I just wanted to say [sm=welcome2.gif]  to idog and good luck in your search!

thank you and you're right, a little bigger than i had in mind!
but how big is your appartment if i may ask?don't you have any problems cause of the size?

My condo is 1200 square feet… but we have been wanting to buy a high rise condo downtown for several years now and plan to do so when the prices go down a bit more. Due to the INSANE housing costs, all we will be able to afford is a condo in the 800-900 square foot range and as long as we keep our furniture simple, then this won#%92t be any problem for 2 greyhounds.

My guys are 76 and 80 pounds (most greys are between 60-75 pounds).  Greyhounds are MAJOR couch potatoes and sleep the majority of the day. If they get moderate exercise daily, they are just fine with that (an hour or so a day).  All but the youngest retired racing greyhounds do well in smaller situations. For the REALLY young ones or the ones with very higher energy, it might be too small unless you have a place to exercise them daily and let them run.  Greyhounds can NEVER, EVER be let off of their leash in an area that isn#%92t fully enclosed though.

I don#%92t know if there are racing greyhound rescues in Greece or not but it might be something to consider if you find that the breeds you are most interested in are NOT going to suit your lifestyle.

Here are a couple of videos in case you are interested. The first one is a funny video on how lazy this breed is (it is meant as a joke, but it is TRUE. Mine sleep about 16 hours a day). [:)]

The second video is just one about greyhound rescue in general in the US.

Pembrokes and Schipperkes are both great dogs with the potential to do well in apartments. I don't know much about Schipperkes so this post is mostly about Pems.

They DO need a fair amount of exercise- a good 30 minute walk and an extra hour of playing or working for young dogs every day, no matter what. Some of that exercise can be indoors, training, but they are happiest when kept busy. And if they're bored, sometimes they'll invent jobs for themselves, like chief destroyer of furniture, which can be less than fun.Early obedience training and consistant handing are important- corgis need a household that the humans are firmly in charge of- this doesn't mean be harsh with them, but it does mean be consistant. Some corgis can be real bullies if they think they will get away with it.

They also shed a LOT- not something that bothers everyone, but some people get Corgis and think since they're shorthaired, they won't shed a lot.

That said, Corgis are fantastic apartment dogs. :) I have a Cardigan myself. :)

My grandmother has had two schipperkes and they are great dogs.  They have a tendency to be over weight so watch how much you feed them.  She got lucky, both dogs are pretty low energy.  Play fetch with them for 5 minutes and they are ready for a nap.  The one she has now barks when someone comes to the door, and that's pretty much it.  They shed a lot though.  I don't think poodles shed that much, and they come in a variety of sizes.

I think that Schipperkes were bred to live their lives on board a ship - that equates to adapting well to an apartment. How is the dog shelter situation where you are?  Would you consider getting a mix breed?

The suggestion to get a poodle is a good one, too.  They are smart, fun, comfortable in an apartment and they don't shed.  They have to be groomed every couple of months.  You would have to look for a decent dog groomer in your area.

My Ex-husband was Greek.  I went to Greek school so that I could understand what my Mother-in-Law was saying about me - just kidding.

I've been there twice.  My Ex husband was from Aigion near Patra.  I still can speak and write enough to get around, but because I don't use it, Secassa polla loya.

I still sing pai, pai to mirmidaki to my grand kids. [:D]

maybe this is just me but i would say get a boston terrier! i love those dogs the four i have owned were all good dogs and great with kids
    • Bronze
I don't know about the Boston terrier. Ha. You might want to try meeting someone who owns one first and see how they strike you. They aren't a dog for everyone. I thought they were adorable until I met a few. I have never met one that isn't a holy terror on wheels. I'm sure they can be fantastic dogs...
You said that you want a purebred dog, but I will say that I found all my best dogs by visiting shelters until I meet one whose personality I like. You don't have to get a purebred to get a small dog. And sometimes purebreds end up in shelters.

I read that sometimes they can actually outsmart their owners!
