fear of specific breeds?

Lets see I have been bitten by a Husky, Papllion and Chihuaha.

But I do not blame the breed I blame bad parents.  [:@]

I'm very wary around Chows.  I had a particularly scary incident that happened while I was grooming one (thankfully I didn't get bit).  I had another Chow lunge at me while i was walking down the road (and I did not make eye contact and I moved away to allow him and his owner to pass with more than ample space).  I just find Chows hard to read....both of these dogs just lunged, not giving any other signal.

Mostly though, I look at the owner....they are what scares me the most.

I am amazed at the number of people who have been bit by a chi.  our chi would never bite anyone she is so happy and social...loves kids.  i have a friend who has two and they are the same way.  my dad has a chi and while she is scared of children she just stays away from them ...
chows seem to make me think twice... it is the one breed that i believe never gives off a signal ...

I am not afraid of any breed of dog.... but I will tell you what... A LOT of people are afraid of Tyson...

When we are walking down the street, people cross, their eyes widen, they pull their children close to them... and this is no exaggeration.  We had a holiday party a few weeks ago, and one of our guests was very cautious of him...

I always chuckle to myself (all the while it breaks my heart), and of course, assure them that he is a wonderful dog, and that there is nothing to be afraid of!

Of course people will be afraid of APBTs because of all the bad press, but I could never imagine Tyson trying to hurt someone.

None of the bully breeds scare me, I've groomed and known too many of them to know the real truth lol.

My favorite was this HUGE pitty named Duke (he was a bad example of the breed, he was definately oversized).  However, he was the most lovable cuddlebug.  I have no doubt he would defend his family if given good reason, but he lived for nothing more than a roll in the mud and someone to pat him (or give him a cookie).  It never ceased to amaze me he would come into the groom shop BROWN from all the mud he rolled in lol....and after a shampoo his true mostly white color would shine through hehe.

Blue was another favorite pitt of mine.  What a dainty little lass.  Very prim and proper, but start rubbing her belly and she'd let out some long very unlady like groans of pleasure.

I take it on an individual dog basis.

And, if anyone would like to ask any questions to help alleviate fears/misconceptions about chows please do!

Right now, no particular breed worries me, but in my youth as a grooming apprentice, I was bit badly by a white toy poodle with dilute pigmentation (brown nose/eye rims). The bite was totally without warning, he jumped at my face, but I got a hand up in time and he got my finger and wouldn't let go. The groomers husband was there and knocked the dog off me, threw a towel over him, and got him in a crate. A few minutes later he wanted to be friends again. Long story short, the little guy became more and more unstable, attacked his owner several times, then was PTS. An autopsy showed a brain tumor. It took me about 10 years to be able to approach toy poodles with his coloration without some uneasiness! Funny how our instincts are. Logic told me it was an isolated incedent with a poor, sick, pup, but the rest of my body went on high elert because of a past experience.

I'm not afraid of any certain breed because it isn't the breed it's the owners fault. The only dog I've ever been bitten by was a Chow...that doesn't mean that I'm afraid of chows. I've had a malamute snap at me. I'm weary of chihuahua's but I'm not scared of them. I just make sure I watch their signals before I pet them.

I was bit once by a black, medium sized dog.  No clue as to what it's breed as I was young, stupid and in college!  I was, ah, drinking, (oh those college days!) and there was this dog tied up outside the bar we were entering.  Being stupid, I went over to it and bent down right in it's face to pet it.  Vrrooom!  That dog was on my face before I knew what hit me!  My lip had a gazillion stitches and I learned a valuable lesson.  I have no scarring from that incident and will always remember to never just approach a strange dog and get in it's face.

I am not afraid of any breed that I can think.  Black dogs don't scare me nor do I feel more "on guard" around them.  The bite was my fault.

I love big dogs and small dogs, but some dogs definitely bear watching and caution before approaching.  Our 1st Mastiff, Max, was afraid of Chihuahuas!  He jumped clear off the ground when approached by a Chi.  Used to crack me up everytime!

I'm not afraid of any certain breed of dog per se, but like others there are ones I watch.  Funny thing is I'm small 5'5 about 100 lbs and none of the breeds I watch are big dogs there all the little ones I could pick up and throw if I felt so inclined to, which I don't.  I have to admit I did use to not like chows I thought all they knew how to do was bark and run along the fence acting like they want to kill you, but then I met a real sweet heart and realized it was  a.) the owners b.) never once did I see that poor chow any other place except that houses front yard [:(]  I was young and foolish at the time, but I guess thats no excuse really.

I am amazed by the amount of you who have been bitten by a dog!

Could some of you tell me how that happened? I'd be interested to know.

I've never had bad experiences with dogs. I too, am the owner of one of the most "feared" breeds out there today, so I don't "hate" against bully breeds specifically.

However, I will shamefully  admit that Rottweilers occassionally terrify me. [:o] Sorry!

I have never been bitten either.  Maybe just luck?  I don't know.  My dog zoe did once protect me from a dog that was charging at me whether or not she would have bitten me I don't know.  This dog was a lab mix.  I know a few rottweilers and love the breed my friend Ashleigh has 2 of them and they are the sweetest cuddliest things.

It's sad how many bad experiences people have had with chows. [&:]

I have never had a bad experience with a chow.  I worked for a groomer/boarder for a while and someone bred them and brought several in to get groomed.  I gave them all baths and didn't get any trouble from them.  It's the smaller breeds that gave me trouble.  My neighbors also used to have 2 chows that they kept in a lion cut they were really sweet and socialized.  I think it's just the owners and how they bring the dogs up.
