    Any ideas what he is?

Hi, I'm looking for help identifying the breed(s) of my dog.  I adopted him 3 months ago and they said he was a Weimaraner mix - I don't see it at all.  He's 2 years old and weighs about 55 lbs.  He's fairly tall - I can scratch him w/o bending over and I'm 5'6.
(that's my daughter and her 4 mo old Pit puppy in the picture - hopefully you can see them)

I don't see any weim or much of any hound in him.  I'm thinking more along the lines of a GSD mix.

I see GSD and/or something northern. I definately don't see a lick of weim.  What's his personality like?

Okay, that's weird, since we were just talking about this. Pure Kelpie. Or BC/Kelpie cross, that would be hard to spot since the breeds are so similar. But one ear is dropping a bit.

There's a Kelpie coming to my herding clinic in January, should be fun to see. I'll take pics, of course.

What's a Kelpie?  GSD was my original thought but he's really fine boned.  I was thinking a Viszla or Pharoh dog mix?  They're so rare tho it's hard to believe one would show up at a shelter.

He's super sweet but leary of strangers.  He loves to play and run outside.  He doesn't seem to be overly fond of kids but is getting better.  Since I have no idea about his background or how he came to be homeless it could be just a general mistrust of (most) people.  He'd probably never have a career has a guard dog but definitely lets me know if somebody "strange" is at the door. [;)]

    I really appreciate the input!

Ok, I found some Kelpie sites and he's not that.  He doesn't have any natural herding or stalking ability - he acts like horses and cows are giant dogs that should play with him. [:D]  His build and the shape of his head is different too.  I don't see any Border Collie in him either.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm arguing w/you - that's not my intention at all.  It's just so hard to tell from pictures.

No, that's the reason for posting these guesses - to get YOU guessing! You might not see any herding behavior away from stock. You'd never know Ben was a working dog as he HATES horses and cattle.

But if you don't see it in the pictures, I'm probably on the wrong track. I'm going to stick with BC mix though. I can't imagine with what, but there could be multiple breeds at work there. Somewhere I have a picture of a dog that looks so much like your dog you'd fall out of your chair. I wonder whether I could find it.

Here's the problem with GSD. There's no liver/chocolate in the breed, right? bb is recessive and therefore to get your dog's color, both parents have to carry that color.

Off the top of my head, here's common medium to large breeds that carry bb:

    Pit bulls
    BCs
    Aussies
    Chow
    Labs
    Brittany Spaniel
    Weim

(I'm sure I'm forgetting something, I'm battling the flu here and a little muzzy headed)

Maybe he's BC/lab, but I really don't see lab body or head type. That's pretty strong in a straight cross. Maybe BC/lab X BC or Aussie? Or why not Weim? But those ears. I dunno, this one's really stumping me.

He kind of reminds me of a Hangin' Tree Cow Dog but that is even more wildly unlikely than a Visla.

I'd like some closer shots...but first off....Doberman...red Doberman, or even fawn Dobe if there's a "sheen' to him (which sounds like there is to get to Weim as a possible). Even without tan points there is something in the bearing that says Dobe to me. ARE there tone on tone red markings on the chest or along the jaws? More pics...please [:D]

Those show dilute german shepherds.  Not to standard, but apparently it happens.  So I wouldn't rule out GSD cross.  To me he looks like a GSD x something lankier...

Bigger pics would help.  He looks like he could be liver and tan, not just liver...  A side shot of him standing would probably help.

I knew I was forgetting something! duh! BC/Dobe? That would be a cool dog. ACD Dobe? I forgot about cattle dogs, too. I'm crawling back in bed . . .

The second picture screams dobe to me. I don't see GSD at all.

    Gorgeous dog!

The second pic does look dobe...

I was thinking red Dobe mix as well. Any idea if the ears were cropped?
    • Gold Top Dog
The ears look to be standard erect ears.
