Am I part Gordon or BelgianTervern

What am I?  Mom thinks Gordon setter/ golden ret/ irish setter/ collie

My hair has thickened since these photos when I was emaciated  My hair is shiny glossy black, medium brown eyes almost bloodhoundish, and I have a fat collie tail and rear end that looks like a collie. I have a heart of gold. I run like the wind.  My vet thinks I'm part Belgian Tervern. When I was 3 I already had white on my muzzle   I love all dogs.  I have black pencil marks on my gold legs.  Somtimes I carry my big tail high, sometimes down.  I am from near Asheville NC.

My guess is Golden Retriever/Rottweiler OR Golden x German Shepherd. I have seen longhaired GSD's that have identical markings/coloring and coat type....the coat is also found on Goldens and the Rottie would go a long way to explain the large domey skull. There is a kindness about his expression that is saying Golden to me...

Gordon Setter are quite rare...as are most Setters unless you live where people use them to hunt and they're often lost. Terv's I think I've only ever seen 2 outside of a show ring [;)].

My mother's dog Motown is a Rottie/Akita mix and looks identical except she has a short double Akita like coat, same coloring and large skull, ear type and tail carriage...she's about 55lbs or so. I sw her mother and she was definitely an Akita...the father was ID'd as Rott by AC. But she has a more oriental inscrutable expression and not the approachable kind look your boy has [:)

OH - I was rescued in "hunt" country in NC.  A gordon was brought in with me.  I was born in a sqalid place and survived a hurricane. .I have at least 2 brothers - One looks half black lab/gordon  and one looks half gordon/pitbull

Is it possbile for a mom to have several fathers of her babies?

Hm...that's funny...I know a dog that looks a LOT like you and he was born in LA amongst the Hurricane Katrina tragedy as a feral pup, but was flown up to MA and is living with someone I know.  We were trying to figure out what kind of mix he may be but came out empty handed...thought maybe Golden/Shepherd.  I just think it's so interesting how a lot of areas seem to have "mutt trends"...I've noticed that the Virginia/SC area has a lot of Lab/Basset types!

He's awfully fine-boned for a gordon mix- heavy bone seems to carry in mixes. I'd bet golden x shepherd. POSSIBLY an English Shepherd mix though- he looks an awful lot like them.

There is no belgian of any type in there.  Aussie maybe, but I lean toward really random and the sporting group.

I tend to agree with mrv.  Some Aussies have a "silvering muzzle" gene that makes them go gray early.  My Sioux is 1/2 Aussie and went gray at a year and a half!  The full tail is probably some kind of herder or spitz breed mixed in.

I don't see any Collie in there.  I'd be inclined to think something more on the lines of Aussie x English Setter.

Don't Shepherds have something similar?  I feel like almost every shepherd I see has a silver muzzle.

Yes, a litter can have more than one sire. Lovely, dog, BTW.

By George I think you've got it !  English Shepherd!   I never knew about them.  He could be the black and tan variety.  His coat is exactly as the standard describes.  His tail is exactly described. It said they are heelers,,,,and I never put 2 and 2 together, but he keeps grabbing our puppy's legs, especailly her back legs (for which I scold him)and pulls her along.
On our walks, everyone thinks he is  a German Shepherd which is fine by me because I feel more protected from bad people thinking this.  Plus I always pretend he is a shepherd because I always wanted one!

Here is pic I found on the net that looks like him...

    What da ya know !

My rare breed senses are twitching and I think he looks like a Leonberger or an Ovtcharka of some sort.  That's very unprobable though, and I would lean more on the side of Golden Retreiver/Rott mix.  He's precious!

Another vote for Golden/Rott.  There might be something else there, too, but those are the breeds I see, especially the Golden.  One thing I'm positive of- he's a stunning dog.  I love the way he looks.  The grabbibng of your pup's back legs doesn't necessarily mean he has a herding breed in him.  Mick was a Lab/English Setter mix, and he did that to our camp director's Lab all the time.

Thankyou ! I adore him too!   Those rare breeds (leo and oct) you listed are gorgeous,,,but they are big dogs.  Red is only about 58 pounds.  I'm curious why do you say Rottie?  Because of the brown and tan?  He doesnt' have the "tailtale" signature brown butt or brown circles over his eyes, or big head.

I am really leaning to golden / english shepard now...here is 2 more photos...the face shot was the first week I got him so he looks really sad and in another world,,,the full body shot I jsut took so you can see his thick coat and tail.
