    Kerry blue Terrier-doodle?

I saw this posted at at local shelter.....somehow, I don't think they got the breed quite right....[8|]

Update Update, finally, someone figured out this handsome dog is a "doodle" !! Yay! they reclassified him as a standard poodle-labrador  mix ( I think might be golden ret. poodle mix) He seems like a sweetie pie.

What are you talking about?  That is the most conformationally correct Kerry Blue I've ever seen.  I bet he's got papers too, doesn't he?  lol  It's amazing what shelters will lie about to get dogs adopted out. I've now found two Plott mixes at the local kill shelter.  One was tricolor and one was black and white.  Neither were anywhere near Plotthound conformation.  One of these days I'm going to track down whoever decides the breeds in that shelter.

papers? why of course he has papers.....on the floor of his kennel maybe! lol

This shelter once had an akita listed as a shepherd mix. She  was small for an Akita, so the shelter's vet said she couldn't possibly be mixed with akita....she clearly had the body structure and markings, she was just small....of course mixes can't look like one breed but inherit the size of  whatever breed the other parent was . Everybody knows that....[;)]

Huh..  So,. the Kerry BLUE comes in more colors now?  That's like talking about a BLACK Westie (as they are the West Highland WHITE Terrier).  Looks like a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle to me.  I can't say the number of times I've gone to a shelter on a call about a Collie, but walk the whole shelter and never find it.  (The last one they said was a smooth Collie - I walked past the cage because it was a Walker Hound!)

Might I remind you that a gal from a RESCUE emailed me to tell me that Sadie (now Trinity) was at the County shelter?  And when I spoke to the guy there he swore up and down that she wasn't there.  How the heck hard is it to identify a PUREBRED GERMAN SHEPHERD?

Just take a look on dogster.com or on yahoo.pets and you'll see that any dog with large pointy ears automatically becomes a pharaoh hound mix, or possibly an ibizan mix.

There are more Catahoula mixes than I care to count, or plott hounds too.  Too bad that there's no simple DNA identifier for breeds.

Yea, but if it has a curly tail it MUST be a basenji.

Yeah and if it has a big head and is brindle it is automatically a Pit mix!  Riiiiiiight...[8|]

I have seen a fair number that are listed as shiba inu crosses that there is no way it is a shiba, like one that was 80lbs, WTF, why not list it as an akita cross at least the size is closer.

around here if the dog has "prick" ears they must be a gsd mix.
any brindling oooops pit bull  uhhh.... "terrier mix"
    curled tail? chow mix
any spots on tonge? chow mix . Even if it looks exactly like a purebred flat coat retriever
blue eye(s) ? husky mix.  even if it's really an Austrailian Cattle dog.

Blue eye around here usually gets you an Aussie identification.  So will any merle color or ticking (unless dogs with ticking are called dalmations).

And of course any long-coated black and white colored dog is a Border collie.  Even though many BCs aren't long coated and about 20% are not black and white!

I always get asked if my AKC blue merle chihuahua is a husky mix[8|]  "Chihuahuas don't come in that color... I've never seen it, so it MUST be a mix!"  Yes, a 4lb husky mix...

    Sigh, people.
    • Gold Top Dog
But Chihuahuas don't come in merle.  There's no way to get that without cross breeding.  It's not a husky mix, but it's not purebred.
    • Bronze
Actually, go to the AKC website.  Merle is an accepted pattern in chihuahuas... there are many arguments about where the merle gene came from... but it doesn't mean that it had to come from cross breeding.  Either way, merles can be registered and until there is proof that they are not purebred, AKC accepts them.

I volunteer at my local shelter.

EVERYTHING is a lab, terrier, beagle, or shepherd mix.

Surrendering owners also have *no* idea.  Yesterday, they received a black and white short-haired "Samoyed."
