    More on belgian colors

Here is a link to some recent pictures of the UBSDA national.  The gallery from the show photographer shows pretty good variety of color from the "grey" sable very light colored dogs to the very dark overlayed mahogany dogs.

nice, thank you!! what color would this be called?

In all likelihood, he is a mahogany and black.  He has "excessive" black overlay since he appears young.  That is not at all uncommon in working lines and can often be laid (many generations back) at the feet of a dutchie.  However, it does occur in other lines as well.  I will scan and post a pic of one of my all time favorite dogs and you will see what I mean.  He has an absolutely Blonde brother.

He's gorgeous;  I love the darker colored dogs.  I never thought about the Belgians being different colors; I always just thought of them as varying shades of the same color.  Except maybe the pale silver color.

thanks!! ((he's my puppy's daddy)) the FCI standard calls for only fawn with black overlay. fawn is hard to define. a "fawn" boxer is a lot redder than a "fawn" corgi. AKC has a few different acceptable colors listed on the malinois reg papers. so...the pic i posted...would that be "fawn with black overlay" in FCI definitions but mahogany by AKC definitions?

I agree that colors are funny things.  Basenjis don't come in fawn.  Those are called red and white.  A horse of that color would be chestnut or sorrel.  A friend who has cairns tells me those dogs drasticly change color over the life of the dog.  She showed me pics of one of her dogs who is now around 10 or 12.  Totally different color!  My mali is a rescue (ILP) so I never put too much thought into her color.
