American Poundpuppy?

These are my sister's dogs. The black and white one on the left is a Border Collie mix she adopted while she lived in Belgium. In this pic, Henry is only about 3 months old, and he's curled up so you can't see much. No use guessing what else he's mixed with. (He's larger now, but still smaller than a BC - only about 45lbs)

However, the one on the right, Patrick, is....? No idea - she tells people "Poundpuppy" when they ask his breed. IMO, his markings are different than a brindle - they look more like stripes. (Does that still qualify as brindle?) His head is super heavy, so our guesses have included pit and some kind of Australian shepherd. She got him from a shelter in Columbus, Ohio and as a puppy looked identical to one of nigguysmom's. He now weighs about 70lbs (he's fat) - the pic next to the puppy makes him look huge, but he only stands about 24" high, I think.

Aussies shouldn't have "super heavy" heads - the Aussie standard calls for a dog of medium build, although I know that some show breeders are producing dogs with heavy bone and copious coats. The first thought that came to my mind was Dutch Shepherd mix, although I know photos can be deceiving. Dutch Shepherds primarily come in brindle, often with the "stripey" quality you mention. Akita mix is another possibility. Better photo would be a help - maybe a profile shot.

I believe stripes are brindle, but oculd be wrong. He actualy looks like what I've heard called a reverse brindle. Anyway, he looks like a small Akita to me. Maybe he has some Akita in his background.

Brindle is just darker stripes on a lighter base color. So yes, he is brindle. Reverse brindle is brindling to the point that the color resembles lighter stripes on a darker color. He does look a bit like an Akita. I don't see any pit in him whatsoever and I don't think there is any Australian Shepherd either. There may be some Australian Cattle dog, but he's a bit too big for that. Is that 24" at the shoulder or at the head?

He kind of has the ears of a Belgian Malanois.

He looks a lot like a friend's BC/Dutch shepherd (known parentage). But there's a hint of Akita there too.

still smaller than a BC - only about 45lbs

Border collies range from 18 pounds up to 60 pounds - there's no size standard enforced on the majority of the breed. 40 pounds is about average for a male.

I see Akita in there too, and Akitas can be brindle....
