    NSDTRs? Anyone...?

I know it's an uncommon breed, but am I the only one here who has a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever? The only one who's ever even heard of it? I haven't heard anything of it, even on the Archive posts...

I have heard of it and have read some info on it.  I don't own one but it seems to be a great breed.

I've heard of them.  Can you tell us about your breed and post some pictures?  Aren't they a smaller dog?  Well, smaller than a Golden that is...

I first heard of Tollers about 25 years years ago (my folks gave me a great book on dog breeds), and saw my first one a few years ago at an obedience match.  I've always been taken with them. My husband saw one at a dog show last year, and liked them, too.  I don't think he'd pass up one up if the timing was right.

She's a pretty girl, but most Tollers also have a white blaze and more of a white tail tip. She does have both, they're just very small.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was just accepted by the AKC in 2004, I believe. It was used to, well, toll ducks. It wouuld distract them or lure them, then the hunters would shoot them, and the Tollers would fetch them and bring them back. Oddly enough, C.J. dislikes the water. She's miserable when she gets a bath.

They're about Border Collie size, and the smallest of the Retrievers. In the Sporting group.

Meh, I'm too lazy to type a lot right now, so do with this. =P

I'm acquainted with a woman who has two.  They are adorable.  She does agility with them and does very well.

I would LOVE one of them.  I've seen them at flyball tourneys - kind of like the retriever version of a Border collie.

I am completely obsessed with the Toller. I adore the breed. They've been my favourite for years, don't know how long exactly but at least 8+ 9which is a really long time, considering I'm not even 18 yet) I have a Toller/Border Collie mix but she's just not anything like a Toller, I call her my BC in disguise as she doesn't look like a BC at all (except in body styling). I had adopted a 'Toller' from the shelter in December, he looked pure but I'm not sure if he was exactly. The original owners said he came from Skylark kennels but their dogs are usually well tempered. This boy wasn't, he attacked absolutely everything and everyone (he was fine when we went t see him in the shelter, but at home he was much different). He was seeing a behaviourist and a trainer but after being deemed a dangerous dog and severely attacking our female Doberman he had to be PTS. Who knows what happened earlier in his life, as Tollers are not like that normally. Anyway, I will be getting a well bred female from a breeder in 2008 who I'd like to show in conformation, agility, obedience and in the field. Tollers are the best breed there is for me and I will never be without atleast one, if not more! They're wonderful.

Before I knew a whole lot about the temperment of the Toller, I was attracted to their size (17-21 inches, 37-51lbs) and coat colour. I love dogs with pigment that blends nicely with the coat (in the Toller's case, orange body with orangey-pink pigment). They can have black pigment too, but I prefer the lighter pigment. After I met my first couple of Tollers, I researched them a lot and I discovered that they were pretty much (lol...I say pretty much, because I doubt many people enjoy the "Toller scream") everything that I wanted in a dog. They're very high energy, high drive dogs and are always wanting to work. They can be very stubborn but are highly intelligent, you have to convince them that what ever you're trying to teach them was actually their idea, but once they understand what you're asking of them they're usually very willing to please. They're also very happy dogs and are constantly wagging their tails, they also look like they have a permanent smile (well, unless they're serious about something...such as a ball) In my honest opinion, the Toller isn't even comparable to the other retrievers. They're more like Border Collies of the retriever world. They're happy to have somebody pet them, of course, but save moast of their exuberance for family and close friends. They do not have the typical Lab or Golden personality of "I just met you but you're my best friend!". They're very devoted to their family though. Of course, I could go on and on but that would take ages, so I'll stop here.....in my opinion there is no dog better for me than a well bred, well trained Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. I'll always have them.

They are my new favorite breed.  ;)  This past winter I had the pleasure of working with a border collie for a few short weeks and fell in love with the temperment, devotion, drive, etc.  I'm doing agility with two of our dogs right now and I'm having a blast.  My two are 5 and 7 so we got started late.  I keep thinking of my next agility dog in a few years and kept thinking of a border collie, but not all borders like to retrieve.  So now I'm thinking a Toller would be a good dog.  I've met one at agility trials here in Indiana and love her!  She's adorable, sweet, very devoted to her owner and also a great agility dog.  I love my mutts and one is devoted and listens very well, but has this shyness thing going on that i can't seem to socialize out of her.  She's slow as mud on the course!  lol...  Very unsure still I guess.  The other guy, well, he loves agility, just in his own time and sequence!  lol..  So I've been thinking of  trying to find a breed that is on the small side, with a temperment similar to a border collie.  I guess the part that attracts me to the Toller is the retrieving part versus the herding part!  We live on a busy road and I'd hate to have a BC that felt the need to herd cars.  :(  I would of course hope to be able to keep him/her busy enough not to want to do that but ya never know....

I love them too!!  There is a beautiful Toller who walks on the trails where we take Wesley on the weekends.  Months ago - both my DH and I saw her and DH immediately asked what kind of dog she was (and he is not usually talkative with people we don't know)...  Now every time we see her, DH says - well, that's our next dog!!  We have started researching them and everything!
