    Pointers....

Does anyone own Pointers (English)? It is one of the breeds I'm considering and I like to hear from people who own the dogs. It would be our second dog and would likely be from the show lines......any comments or advice would be appreciated...

HI! Im Melissa and i Am owned by a wonderful english pointer named REMY!

Remy is 2 years old now and he is a GREAT dog. We currently show him and he almost has his championship (needs 3 more points to finish)

He has a TON of energy and could run around outside all day if you let him. BUT he also is very quiet in the house and a very clean dog. (Super easy to housebreak too!) Out of all the dogs ive ever owned he has the best personality :) he is so funny and keeps me laughing all day long. Very lovey and is super nosey, he needs to be in whatever room you are in to make sure he is not missing out on anything.

I find most pointers to be more sensitive than other breeds and just one steern "NO!" is enough for him. if he thinks im upset witih him he closely follows me around the house and if i sit he will lick my face untill he feels that im not mad at him anymore. LOL

he sleeps in our bed and gets along GREAT with other dogs. Loves hunting for birds in the woods and Needs a good off leash run a few times a week. Only thing thats frustrating with him is he is a picky eater. but thats it.

here is a slideshow of remy-enjoy and

I have a rescue pointer called Grace.  She's about 2 also.  Everything that Melissa said is absolutely true.  You can tell that there is some greyhound in there somewhere because she can do laps around my E. Setter, who is also very energetic.  In the house, though, she is very calm.  She is wonderful with little children and also pretty sensitive.  She is also very quiet, and leaves the barking to my setter girl.

The only things that you should be aware of is that they do like to run, so you have to work continuously on recall.  My little girl is from a field bred line.  Recall can be an issue because when they latch on to something to run after, they can be quite selectively deaf.  Yesterday, though, she did getout of my husband's car and took off down the road.  He called her and she came right back to him (phew!).

This weekend, Grace, my pointerand I met up with several other pointer people and went down to the beach.  We had 5 pointers and 1 setter, all running on the beach together.  What a sight.  [:)]

    Hi Christina,

I don't know anything about pointers . . . I just saw this thread and remembered a while ago you were thinking about getting a ridgie as your next dog, weren't you?
    • Gold Top Dog
Actually, yes, ridgies are still at the top of our list [:D]  I just know someone who just got a young male pointer that is show quality, and if all goes well and she finishs him, she will breed, and she offered me one of the pups if I was interested.  I'd done a little reading on pointers, and obviously wouldn't get a dog just because it was free if it was not right for our lifestyle, and I just wanted a little imput from those that had owned them.

IDK though...DH is not much of a sporting breed guy.  The only sporting breed we can agree on are Golden Retrievers, which we both like.  I like labs a lot, but he is not a huge lab fan.

For now we are kind of going back and forth between ridgies and dobermans.  DH really likes dobes, and everytime we meet a dobe he wants one more.  I like dobes too, but I also, REALLY like ridgies....

Ok, Ok, just checking [;)] Good luck with your dog search! You seem like you put a lot of research into all the various breeds so I'm sure you'll end up with the one that is perfect for you!

Ok, back to the pointer discussion [:)]

As you probablly know we currently foster through Pointer Rescue(PRO) an we have an male English Pointer Jake. This is our first time actually interacting with Pointers but  from what I have read an spoke with all people in rescue what MellissaD says is pretty typical of the breed. Jake is somewhat different because he had such a rough start in life so I wouldn't really judge his actions to most E. Pointers but you could check out the rescue site an they share info aswell also if you want I could see if someone could email you who has more exspierence with the breed . My neighbor who owns a Dobie has just added a pointer to his family, they named him Willie and he is 10 months. This family has always been strictly Dobie but they took pity on this pup when they saw him at the spca. They are so proud and suprised by his manner and intelligance! Great dogs!
