    Bernese Mountain Dogs

My neice has one. My sister just asked her daughter the breed and emailed me to tell me...knowing I am a dog person.   Then she told me that Amber went to get him fixed and her mother (my sisters daughter) talked her out of getting him fixed since they are an expensive dog. I suppose some people see $$$ and $$$ only.  I can't see this girl doing this for the love of the breed..and I can't believe she knows anything about it.  Just thought I would come to this section of the forum to see what anyone has to say!
talk her into getting him fixed!!!  then we won't have more unwanted pups in the pound[:@]
then talk her into getting into carting!  that would be more fun than breeding anyway[:)]

Tell her that if she enjoys sitting up all night with puppies post-whelping so mom doesn't roll on them, frequent heartbreak when a dog finishes their titles and then doesn't clear OFA, and a real tendency towards relatively early death, go for it!

I have a friend who shows BMDs and all the stuff she goes through... ugh. CEA and epilepsy and all the collie problems seem easy in comparison.

I really don't know anything about Bernese Mountain Dogs...looked them up and they are really cute.
But I am doing my best to talk Amber into getting her dog spayed. She knows nothing about having puppies...she doesn't even really care about the breed as much as she loves her puppy. Its her mother that says "thats an expensive dog,,,don't get her fixed,,,have puppies!"
    Give me a break!

Neutering the dog is the only way to go.  Dogs who are not neutered tend to wonder/escape more (just saw a escaped berner in the pet store the other day…poor employees were franticly trying to find it#%92s owner).  A breeder isn#%92t going to pay someone to breed to a unknown/unproven dog.  Actually I should say a “good” breeder isn#%92t.  If it is all about the money…good luck with that!  I had a friend that adopted a dog from a (bad) breeder.  I went to visit my friend a week or so after she got the dog and I looked at her and asked, “is there any way she could be pregnant?” Well she was…and after a c-section, 6 dead puppies (one lived) and a pyometra my friend was $6000 lighter.
