Time to Guess the mix v. Dane/???

Hi.  I got a dane mix from the pound about a week ago.  They told me he was about 9 weeks old.  I named him LeRoy.  He was very skinny when I got him.  Someone moved  out of an apartment, leaving him alone to starve and die.   He is really sweet and laid back.  He doesn't really chew your fingers much but loves toys and food.  I was wondering if anyone hadany input on what his breed might be.  The dane in him is pretty obvious.  I am thinking the other part may be lab or a lab mix?  If it helps, he doesn't really bark much, just a ton of whining and puppy noises along with some howling on occasion.  He also thinks he is a lapdog.   Thanks!  I am glad I found a good website to help me out with this little guy.  He is sitting beside me staring me down as I type this.  [:)]

ps, he has alot of patience lol

oh my gosh, what a cutie pie he is! He looks like he might have some hound in him but that's just a stab in the dark.

Oh my, what a cutie!  He looks a little like a Rhodesian Ridgeback to me.  Good luck with the "little" fellow!

Thanks for the responses.  I thought he may be a ridgeback as well at first.  As I was looking, I didn't see any with white feet tips or anything white on their face.  He definately resembles one though.  Maybe he is part ridgeback instead of dane?  I guess only time will tell?

I was thinking maybe he was a Ridgeback mix, and not Great Dane, too.  But given his size, I'm wondering if he's a Great Dane/Ridgeback mix.  A teacher I work with recently bought a Ridgeback pup.  Even being underweight, LeRoy looks a lot bigger than she was when they brought her home at 12 weeks.  Check out the dog in the middle row of the second link I posted above.  It has a white front foot.  The one right below it has a white throat and belly.

I firmly believe he is part ridgeback now.  Alot of his markings are the same, especially on his chest.  I think he might be a dane as well because as you mentioned, he's a big boy. [:D] Thanks for the help!

i wonder what made the shelter people think Dane.... or any purebred.
most people that would leave a dog to starve to death itself in an apartment wouldnt have access to such breed mixes. true it does happen, but i dunno. i just find it hard to believe. I know there are dane mixes and RRB mixes, but i say prove it... unless you bred them yourself or met at the very least the mother, then you're only guessing.
its possible he's just a large generation of mutts. little of this, little of that. there probably hasnt been a pure bred in his lineage for sometime.
And until he is grown, you'll never even come close. so many breeds have these traits as puppies. Shepherds, Danes, Mastiff and Bull Mastiff, Am Staff, Grey Hound, not to mention several other hound breeds, and then there is the possibility of Doberman. I once had a doberman mixed with who knows what his mom was. I knew his dad, he lived down the block. a friend own the mother.. she looked like maybe beagle/shepherd/collie but who knows. the puppies those two created were interesting. one of them had dobie markings but was silver instead of tan. and some looked like this guy, same ears and everything. and they got to be very LARGE dogs.. well... the puppy i got did. he was very cool and calm. laid back and just went with the flow. He was one of those dogs that surprised people. they would look at him and think he was a big mushy lover boy... but that was until they got too close to me. he was my body guard.

anyway, your pooch is way too adorable and i'm glad you rescued him! i REALLY love the picture of him with the helmet too, you should take that one again with some better lighting though, its hard to see those great big puppy dog eyes [:D]

Hey, makes sense to me!  Thanks for the input.

He's very cute!!! I think that he looks a little too big to be a RR and his hair looks a little bit too long. How much does he weigh?
    • Bronze
I don't know how much he weighs exactly.  I do know he is still very thin for his size, but not as skinny as he was when I got him. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow for an exam. and his 2nd shots. I will let you know. [:)]

So is he on track for being about the size of a 10 weel old dane puppy aside from being thinner?

At the same time, he's barely bigger than Mal was at 10 weeks- and Mal will probably mature around 25.75", which is significantly smaller than your average male Dane. Mal is a smooth collie.
