6 month old German Shorthaired Pointer...driving me bonkers!

Well Beau is officially OBNOXIOUS! He has just gone insane lately, grabbing everything, into everything, running full speed in the house constantly, chewing holes in his bed that lines his kennel, just a pain in the rear! I know he will always be high energy but he is just being a pain in the....lately! Dont get me wrong, love him dearly but could use a little "moral support" from my fellow GSP owners! I am exhausted ....between him, two terrier mixes and full time work....whew...I need a vacation!

While I don't have a GSP pup, I have made it through a Psycho Dobe Pup!  Poor Bevo was so clumsy as a pup.  He would try to run stupids (zoomies or whatever else you may call them) & trip over his feet.  Inevitably, he would always break something in my house.  Just wait the craziness out.  It gets better.

Butterfly: if you need some hints or some help with behavior issues, post a thread in the "behavior" section, it will get a lot more traffic there.

In general though, you have a field dog and as such she's going to be high energy for a long time.  So you may consider getting involved in some field trials.

I have a pointer and a setter.  My setter was an over-the-top terror until she was about two.  She is still full of energy and if we miss agility class, she still will tear through the house and act like a nut.  My pointer is OK in the house, but out in the yard she will just run back and forth looking out into the meadow.  Agility class and obedience class makes them so much more pleasant during the rest of the week.

Try to find some activity that will challange his mind as well as his body.  At 6 months, he's old enough to start in obedience.  With agility, you have to becareful, still, with growing bones and joints.  Take him out to the park on a long line where he can run full out in a huge circle around you (change directions often).  Start clicker training with him and for 5 minutes at a time, have him go through his repitory of tricks, etc. when you bring him in the house, feed him, and the like.   The point is, a tired puppy is a good puppy.  [:)]

Oh man I have been there and  done that.  The good news is that it happens less often when they get  older.  Hawk sometimes will get a bug up his butt and race around the house like the daytona 500.  What you need to do is find an activity for the little guy to engage in.  That is the only sure way to help curve the zoomies.   And just wait until he turns 2 and is a pain in the butt teenager that knows everything.  It does get better though.   All a shorthair needs is a job to do provided he has a good temperment and is not hyper active. Hawk is out of field trial lines and he loves to run but in the house he is a cuddle bug .  If I miss a couple of walks or runs in the field by the dog park  though he acts out of his mind.  He will chew everything that happens to be near his mouth at that time  (panty hose, bed post, gym equipment)   dig the rose bushes up and run through the house like he was possed by a demon.  Just find an activiy that you think you might enjoy like agility, frisbee, fly ball etc.  Training is very important so definately do some obedience with him.  If you need more suggestion let me know and good luck.

In the last couple of months my dog has really began to calm down.  She is either 7 or 8 years old.  I am not sure if it is age or the fact that we recently went through obedience or that I started feeding her dinner out of her kong on an almost daily basis or if I am just getting used to her energy and the constant use of my house as a race track. I have only had her for a year, but I couldn't imagine loving anyone more.
