i dont know if they are the same personality, but my mom has a bichon/maltese mix. She is about ten years old and was dumped in the local shelter because, according the previous owners, she took a sudden dislike to the other dogs in her home and kept picking fights with them.
my mom got her for my gandmother, she has parkinson's with dementia. since we got the dog my grandmother sleeps better at night, and seems to take more interest in her surroundings.
The strange thing is this... Tara, the dog, only does "her job" when she has to. once my grandmother is asleep she will claw at the bedroom door to be let out so she can go sleep in my mom's room. if my mom leaves the house the dog will sit beside the window and wait for her, or she will bark excitedly if she hears my mom outside or sees her drive up.
My mom isnt quite as big a fan of dogs as she was when she was younger, and sees the dog as a pest..... she doesnt want the fluffy thing in her lap or in her bedroom. Tara is supposed to be my grandmother's companion.... but Tara says otherwise. my mom is finally coming around to accepting her, but it has taken all summer for her to do it.
another thing about Tara is she doesnt seem to like kids much, but she is an older dog. she isnt vicious, but she has snapped AT my son. she doesnt know he wont hurt her, so we have to keep an eye on them both when we visit. my son likes animals, though he seems to be more of a cat person.. but he cant resist the fluffy coat.
Which is another thing to consider.... both breeds are prone to tangles and you have to brush them every day just like you would your own hair.
When we first brought Tara home she was recovering from a bladder infection. She was also covered in matts. I know shelters will do the bare minimum with medical procedures but i dont know why they missed the reason why Tara had a UTI... she had a huge knot of hair covering her private area..... when i was grooming her i noticed her belly was covered in knotted hair... i made her lie down so i could trim them away... thats when i discovered the matt covered in urine and stinking to high heaven. I was angry at both the vet AND previous owners because that knot of hair was huge! it had obviously been there a long time.... So please take the grooming into consideration. Either learn how to do it yourself or pay someone, a profesional, to do it. It doesnt have to look pretty and fancy. it just needs to be healthy so your dog can be healthy.
good luck!
