Canary Dog?

    Canary Dog?

We had this dog at the shelter and he was listed as a pit bull.  I'm not big into terriers or "bull" breeds so I don't know much about them.  His name was Clyde and last week this other volunteer said to us "Did you know Clyde was adopted and got brought back b/c he attacked a cat?" and I said "Clyde the pit bull?" and she said "Yeah, but he's not a pit bull, he's a canary dog."

I've heard of a lot of dogs that aren't as popular, but I've never heard of canary dogs.  Anyone have one?  Are they very similar to a pit bull in temperament, drive, etc?

I just had to google this one and this is what I came up with:

Yeah Canary Island Dog is yet another name for them.
A lot of dog...needless to say...with a lot of bad breeders out there breeding for the wrong reasons.
They were the breed involved with the Diane Whipple mauling...owned by scum like the ones who owned those two...well. Good ownership makes all the difference. There are plenty of good examples out there...but they require a knowledgeable owner.

They're cool looking dogs, I don't know anything else about them.  They aren't common at all here in the U.S.  For some reason I never made the connection between Canary Dogs and Presa de Carnario until just now.  Sometimes things just don't click, lol.

If you had one at the shelter, I wonder if it wasn't just an attempt to get away from the name "pit bull."

Nope, we label them pit bulls, even some that IMO are barely 25% pit bull looking.  Another volunteer told me he's a canary dog, but he's always been labelled pit bull.
