Question about dog on February issue of The Bark

Which breed of dog is pictured here?  If you can't see the picture it is located at [linkhttp://www.thebark.com]www.thebark.com[/link].  Thanks!

Looks like a fluffy coated Siberian Husky. They come in solid white and a longer coat, tho it's not desireable for the ring or work....it's lovely! It might nto be a long coat but the furnishing around the ears look longer and finer than a reg. coat.

I think it is definitely a Samoyed. Blue eyes are very rare but they do crop up every once in a while in purebred Sams. (they are also a show ring disqualification.)

I bought this issue a while ago. Seeing the picture close up has me just a little concerned about the lack of pigment or fading pigment around the eyes and mouth. There is an auto-immune disease that has that as its first symptom. I think it's referred to as VKH and is more common in Akitas.

One of the hallmarks of Samoyeds, is the BLACK pigment on nose leather and eyerims. In fact I've never seen one without it. Sammy's also have different head type, from what i am familiar with.

This dog has the type of pigment common to white dogs, or those of a "dilute" genetic background. Looks like it has a nose like my Sandy...light greyish pink in winter...daker almost liver color in summer. I don't see much off about the pigment considering the color of the dog. Missing pigment on lips or mouth is not uncommon...esp if the dog carries genes for broken coloration.

I still stick with white Siberian....here's a page for you dlg...Skye in particular looks similar to your cover dog.

This page is about wooly coated Sibes...note "Molly"....

My guess would be a Pure White Siberian Husky with a Plush Coat.  The wooly has extremely long hair; the plush would be in the middle of the standard and wooly.  Blue eyes are also common in the breed. Here is a link to a website that shows all the different colors and coat length of the Siberian husky it might help. http://www.huskycolors.com/colors.html

Reasons why I think it's not a Siberian. Ear set is too wide. Sibe ears are on top of their head. Muzzle is too full. Most importantly, the Samoyed smile. You don't get that upturn in the corners with a Siberian.

I have seen Samoyeds with snow noses this extreme. Dogs can also lose pigment for various reasons.

I've seen an all white Malamute, and could imagine this dog being a Malamute because of the fuller muzzle and ear set.

That doesn't look at all like a husky to me, other than the blue eyes (which do appear in other breeds). The ears are totally wrong (way too wide set and not prick enough), and the muzzle isn't narrow enough.

My immediate first thought was Samoyed, too. I don't know about the black rims and eyes, though; this dog certainly isn't showing that.

Are we sure it's a purebred dog? I could see a Sammy/Mal or maybe even a Sammy/Akita mix.

I'm with Gina & scoobychick- looks like a pet quality white Siberian.

The links I posted show a huge range in ear sizes and sets from GSD-like to Shiba-Like. Husky's are popular with BYB's...their "type" is far from set.

Whoever said Mal...that's also something I could see.

We may never know...but perhaps some could order a copy...they usually say who their "cover dog' is....or at least DogFancy used to? [;)]

I looked at the issue and I didn't see any information about the cover dog.  I e-mailed them to ask about the dog, but I haven't gotten a reply yet.  When I first saw the dog I thought Malamute or Samoyed, but the coloring (all white with blue eyes) was throwing me off.  I lived with a girl who had a husky, but that breed never crossed my mind.  Hopefully the magazine will write back and the issue will be resolved. :)
