    Chow Chow owners!!!!

Hi all, I am a newbie to idogs and to dog ownership, I just got my 1st dog 4 weeks ago he is a male Chow Chow named Simba. He is all different colours mostly fawn, up until about 2 weeks ago he also had a black mask on but that has slowly dissapeared.

Anyway I could talk about him all day long but the reason I posted this thread is for advice/tips on owning a Chow, I did alot of research before I bought him but dont know anyone who owns one.

I have already seen lots of pics of Willow & Churchill from the old site and was hoping for some pearls of wisdom!!!! Both are fab looking Chows might I add!!

P.s the small pic of Simba is when I 1st got him, he is huge now at 3 months and growing by the minute. Also he is a bit of a chewer and a barker, he thinks he is King of the house and will bark when he wants his own way. He is so funny he just learned how to climb the stairs last week and today came down by himself!!!

Sorry............here I go again I just cant help myself.

Hope to hear from someone soon.

    Thanks Sarah

To idog and conrats on your new baby. Although I don't really have any specific advice on rasing a chow I do think they are beautiful and I am sure that you will get great advice from Willow and Churchill's momma when they see the thread. Along with others that are familiar with the breed. Enjoy your baby and look forward to seeing lots of pics:)

Hi Sarahlou...welcome to idog.  Garrett stole my darn dog for HIS sig, so you're gonna think we're ALL of bunch of gsd owners!! [:D]

No chow specific advice, but with all dogs, they need to know that YOU are the leader...just be a benevolent one.

Hi Sarahlou... just wanted to say welcome... Simba is adorable!!

I used to have a chow mix and my dad currently has a beautiful black female chow. Don't have any specific advice but ask whatever questions you want I haven't seen a question yet that someone around here didn't know the answer to [:)]

Sarah, he's adorable.  One thing I can't stress enough is socialize, socialize, socialize.  I'd take him everywhere and get him used to all kinds of dogs and people.   I'd take him to a puppy class as soon as he's old enough.  You want to nip that pushy barking behavior right away too.  It may seem cute now but it won't be later.

Having Willow has been one of the biggest challenges of my life but I also love her more than anything.  I'm so glad you have a chow and I'm looking forward to helping with any questions and also seeing him grow into the stunning animals that they are.  Welcome and congratulations.  :)

PS---He looks like he is a cinnamon.  Chows come in red (most common), black, cream, cinnamon and blue (least common).

Yeah thats it Cinnamon thats his colouring, he is quite Red on his head but Blonde on his chest and rear end!!! He is a mix of lots of colours.

I take him with me as much as is possible, to the shops, friends houses etc he is really confident. But I must admit the barking has become a pain when I am cooking he will bark at me (obviously asking me to feed him)

Must look into puppy training classes
