    Advise from Husky owners

I am thinking about taking a Husky mix who needs a permanent home. I met him once, he is beautiful, I loved his personality and his energy. He seemed to be a lot like my cat - quiet, aloof, serious and very gentle. He was found as a stray and he has shot gun wound on his back end.
My question to Husky owners is how, from your experience, do they interact with with cats? I read in other forums that Huskies have such a high prey drive that they can never be trusted with felines. This particular dog hasn't been "tested" with cats, but he does go for rabbits.
(I also have an English Cocker who gets along with my cat nicely.) Any comments, stories are appreciated!

I got my husky as a pup so she grew up with my cats.  I trust her with them while I'm home and at night but when I go out I prefer to crate her.  I know that if she got bored and I wasn't around she'd play to rough with them.  And I've heard to many horror stories about family cats being killed by the family dog. She does have a high prey drive and tries to chase squirrels and other peoples cats, but she's very good with mine and knows not to hurt them(at least while i'm around).   Just because this dog goes for rabbits doesnt mean it'll go for your cat.

I don't have a husky but I have a catahoula x that has very high prey drive.  It took about 5 months before she has accepted our outside cats as hers.  A "leave it" command is essential and having your dog on a leash around the cats will give you control if they decide to chase.  The cats we have here are all outdoors so they can escape when they have too but now Xena is really good with them.  There are 3 stray cats out here, we have adopted one and that took another 3 months for Xena to accept him but the other strays she will chase.
Dogs can learn to accept cats as long as you are very consistant that they are not chased, ever.  Even if Xena playfully chases the cats I will remind her to "be nice to the kitties" and she will calm down. Being even if she was being her playful self she could hurt them.
Also some cats are good at defending themselves, Nova the stray cat, chases Xena. The best "leave it" command can come from a cat. =)

I have a 2 1/2 year old Husky/GSD mix (Timber) for only 2 months now. I also have a cat (Dallas) and this dog had never been around a cat before so I was a little nervous about introducing them. For the first few weeks I kept the upstairs closed off with Dallas up there & Timber downstairs and I only allowed them together when I was there to supervise. Of course at first Timber was curious about Dallas but he never charged him or tried to bite him and after the first day Timber no longer cared about the cat. Dallas was harder but I figured that would happen because he had been terrorized (not bitten though) by a pit bull before. Timber got a lot of smacks in the face and eventually became terrified of Dallas. When I was home supervising Timber would try to go upstairs and Dallas would run after him and attack him as if to say "no way..the upstairs is mine!)
It took about 2 weeks for Dallas to realize that Timber was not going to hurt him. And after 3 weeks of keeping them seperate during the day I was finally able to allow them together. I have no problems with either one of them now. They follow each other everywhere now. If Dallas goes upstairs Timber has to follow & vice versa. And when I put Timber outside Dallas stares out the window watching him the whole time and then they have a "reunion" of sorts when Timber comes back in. They sniff each other all over and then run to the living room together.

Oh yeah...I had a bird that I was watching for my sister until she could find a place that allowed pets (where she lived she couldn't even have caged animals! [:@;)..Timber did try to eat the bird. But he ignores my hamster & fish completely.
