Some Questions about Pitbulls

    • Gold Top Dog
They are MUCH too young for all the exercise you are giving them.

    Tone is down A LOT.

    Oh yeah!!!
See, I forget these things because I don't have a puppy, but yeah, you might want to not run with them. If you do, make it no more than around the block. Pups cannot do the hard exercising that adult pit bulls can.[;)]

How far are you running and how fast do you feel you might be going?
I'll assume these girls are crated during the day when your working?

If they are crated then of course they'll want to get out and burn some energy off and they should, you just want to be careful of how much stress you put on them conversed to how much they need. I tend to use a long training lead (30 or 50 ft) to let my guys work out the bugs with their zoomies that way you can watch for when they are getting run down a little to work on some basic training comands since they like to think, work and play and play and play [:D]
Some times we think of how we feel when we are out and our energy levels and know when we need to turn back, as you said that Smokey ran harder I would say she was still full of herself so you must be judging the exercise well, just watch for lagging as you run as that will be the first sign that the girls are tiring and of course I know you already know that each one will use their energy differently.

I started road working Markie this past summer when we got serious about his showing this year as a beginner specials dog. It was very clear to my son and I when he was feeling full of himself or a little on the down side in his workouts. We did not run him daily, in fact one day was a workout ( 3/4 mile at a full trot) and the next day would be lunge line playing giving his body and muscles time to heal and still stay active. Keep in mind he is 4 not a pup.
Excercise is an important key to a well behaved dog and can be one of your best advantages to allow concentrated training time and always end your traing with play so the girtls look forward to working out and playing. The days are short now but you'll have more fun with this as we get into spring/summer.

We don't run every day just when they have way more energy than I know what to do with.  They haven't quite figured out fetch yet, Smokey will chase but only brings it back the first couple times.

We run MAYBE at most a mile total with lots of walking and sniffing.  I'm using one of those retractable leashes I think it goes up to 45 feet but it keeps it from getting tangled in the sage brush easily.

I don't like to tire them out too much just take the edge off the energy.  They're actually around the house during the day right now cause mommy is home for a little while.  The crates unfortunately haven't come in yet and the only ones we found local we over twice the price or plastic...

We ran yesterday as I said and they still seem calmer today for it which is nice.

Are these guys big into burying stuff?  We're missing a few toys, chewies, and such and I'm wondering if I'll find them in the sand of the backyard....
    • Gold Top Dog
That is still WAY too much exercise for little, growing pups.

Use a short leash since you are beginning basic training. Allowing such a young pup on such a long leash, teaches them they can have as much freedom as they want, and makes them think they have no boundaries, or rules.

So I would tone down the exercise, and get shorter leashses, and begin basic obedience.

The leashes can be kept short.  I'll tone down the exercise.

We're starting the obedience already.  We're still trying to find something formal but I'm working on them at home.
