    dogo argentino

I was just curious if any of you guys have experience with dogo argentinos. I've always thought that they were the most beautiful dogs. Anyway, I'm pretty dead set on getting a dobe, but i still have an open mind. I've never personally met a dogo...how bout you guys?

ETA: i've read about them on dogbreedinfo.com and they seem excellent, but i wouild rather hear personal experiences because i'm not sure how accurate that stuff is.

I have met them at pet expo, rare breed shows, held at the Expo and from what I have seen they are great dogs, amazing looking dogs.  =)

I have some experience with a few different dogos and I can confidently tell you that they are wonderful, wonderful dogs. Very, very sweet, docile and great with people of all shapes and sizes. The only common issue a few of them seemed to have was low tolerance for small animals. But, I'm sure that's something you could work out in the puppy stages.

Overall, I love the breed and I would highly recommend them. A VERY good breeder is an absolute must though since the breed is still so rare.

I had a brother/sister pair in one of my obedience classes.  Very well behaved and easy learners.  The couple that owned them had a new baby and both of the dogs watched over her like a hawk.  They were sweet and loving with people, playful and tolerant of other dogs (medium-large breeds - don't know about small) then would go out on the weekend and hunt hogs.  Truly versatile.  I wouldn't be afraid to own a good one.  You'd want OFA and temperament testing for sure.

I doubt you'd like the breed as they are now.  They are being bread very aggressive for dog fighting.  It's sad but that's what people want.  The biggest and the baddest.  People forget that there is only one toughest dog and people that buy for that reason are usually disapointed.  Beautiful dogs and hope you get one that gets along with your other dogs.

I have people telling me my Boxers look like Dogos, although I do not really have experience with that breed. Just breeds that look like them[;)]

I was wondering then, why they are banned in some countries under the Dangerous Dogs Act?

I've met one or two responsibly owned rescued dogos. Very sweet, docile, et. - because the owners were responsible, caring, and well informed people.

In many regions "pit bulls" (often includes Am Staffs, APBTs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and "mixes" of any of the above), Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, and other breeds are banned because of tradegies involving one or more irresponsibly owned dogs. Any blocky, "pit bull" type dog can trigger an avalanche of laws against Dogos, Presas, and other look-a-likes (I know - they don't look alike!). Recent press involving an unregistered Presa killing its owner (who had received more than one dangerous dog citation) is such a case. Certain appearances (which are easily associated with specific breeds) rise in and out of popularity with the wrong sort of people. Unfortunately, a fearless, utterly devoted, physically powerful animal - the ideal therapy, SAR, or other service K9 - is undisputably dangerous when handled by an irresponsible, insecure person, and/or malicious person.

Some of my best therapy dogs (all rescued) consist of a large "pit bull" type dog, a Golden, and a Doberman mix. All three are utterly fearless and very affectionate with strangers. But all three are completely devoted and wouldn't hesitate to die protecting me, their cat, their patients, or their families (not something I'd like to see happen!). My Golden did put himself in between me and a copperhead snake once, but he's fine.

It is never the dog's fault, let alone the breed's! Any healthy dog with a loving, considerate owner will be a perfect companion.

Irresponsible ownership, failure to enforce basic dog law

I've only ever seen one Dogo in person, at a UKC event. She was being shown.

Afterwards she was standing with her owners when a man came up to ask if he could pet her, upon being told yes he kneeled down and extended his hand, she sniffed,...he patted her chest and she started to stiffen up...I could see this from where we were a few feet back. The man reached out again and she snapped at him...then growled...in that order.

Her owner promptly swept her head around...laughed nervously and crated her. Probably lack of socialization or stress...socialize them out the whazoo would be my advice...then be prepared for them to still not like people they don't know well approaching randomly. Same can be said for a lot of breeds.

I think Dogo's are absolutely gorgeous. As far as them being banned, it's quite simple.. they look like white Pit Bulls to those who have no clue. Dogo's aren't a popular breed, and I would go so far as to say they're pretty rare in some parts, and I highly doubt there's been a rash of attacks involving Dogo's.  I mean, there are some places that ban Borzoi(Russian Wolfhounds as they were once known) and Irish Wolfhounds because some idiots believe the "wolf" in wolfhound means they're part wolf and we can't have none of those running around and if my 12 and 15lb Boston Terriers constantly get mistaken for Pit Bulls that tells you right off the bat that people have no clue about dog breeds and these are the fruitcakes who are behind breed bans and BSL. Very scary if you ask me. [:@]
