I've met one or two responsibly owned rescued dogos. Very sweet, docile, et. - because the owners were responsible, caring,
and well informed people.
In many regions "pit bulls" (often includes Am Staffs, APBTs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and "mixes" of any of the above), Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, and other breeds are banned because of tradegies involving one or more irresponsibly owned dogs. Any blocky, "pit bull" type dog can trigger an avalanche of laws against Dogos, Presas, and other look-a-likes (I know - they don't look alike!). Recent press involving an unregistered Presa killing its owner (who had received more than one dangerous dog citation) is such a case. Certain appearances (which are easily associated with specific breeds) rise in and out of popularity with the wrong sort of people. Unfortunately, a fearless, utterly devoted, physically powerful animal - the ideal therapy, SAR, or other service K9 - is undisputably dangerous when handled by an irresponsible, insecure person, and/or malicious person.
Some of my best therapy dogs (all rescued) consist of a large "pit bull" type dog, a Golden, and a Doberman mix. All three are utterly fearless and very affectionate with strangers. But all three are completely devoted and wouldn't hesitate to die protecting me, their cat, their patients, or their families (not something I'd like to see happen!). My Golden did put himself in between me and a copperhead snake once, but he's fine.
It is never the dog's fault, let alone the breed's! Any healthy dog with a loving, considerate owner will be a perfect companion.
