Hound + Hound = ???

    Wow!!!

I think we've found our mix!

    Beagle/Foxhound.

She's got a shorter nose and shorter legs than your picture... and the beagle has a shorter nose and shorter legs than her! So she just averages out between the two.

So... nose on four legs + one darn fast runner = Mercy. :)

I was just going to say beagle/foxhound... my old roommate has one!

    Very very adorable!!

Hmm considering there were less than 100 total Foxhounds (combining both types) reg with AKC in 2005 and the number falls every year I'm sticking with the Coonhound (probably Treeing Walker) X Beagle...as folks who hunt with Beagles usually have Coondogs as well. [;)]

I have to agree with Gina - foxhounds are rare!

There *are* plenty of intact foxhounds around that aren't registered with the AKC (with hunt clubs) but that's still a TINY number- probably less than 2K born every year. But they're not loose except when hunting, so the chances of one siring an oops litter is, I think, pretty low.

    I vote TWCH x beagle. :P

We theorized that somebody had tried to teach Mercy to hunt; only they'd done it badly... she could easily have originated from a group of hunting dogs.

In areas where Foxhounds are still hunted, the occasional dog gets lost - and if he isn't a good hunter, they don't spend much time looking.  So, in some areas, you can find them, or mixes.  My own dog is probably foxhound x redbone.  But, that face says Treeing Walker to me, and the likelihood of an intact Walker being out and about, especially in the South, is pretty good.  The spay/neuter rate is not good in the areas where those dogs are common.

How about a Harrier?  She's about the right size...

    Probably too rare though.

Looks like a FoxHound to me

As somebody who has lived with a Treeing Walker-BINGO!   The one thing that really separates them from others like foxhound is they have a tendency to use the front paws almost like hooks and they reach out for your arm when they want attention and actually hook the paw around rather than just place the paw on your arm...It is much like they wrap their front paws trying to get up the tree trunk.  They run like the wind, and have an almost greyhound like tuck up in the rear, but broader and more muscular in the chest.  The legs are not heavily boned enough for a Harrier-treeing walker and fox hound mix is possible as many people breed for huntability rather than pure bred lines-But looking at the shape of her paws, and I am going to guess that when she is standing she is quite well up on the front of her pads.

Oh yeah....and the escape artist bit comes from being a trained hunter....They literally see and hear nothing but their prey when they are on scent.  A nose with four legs is an apt description.  If she is pure walker, it could be she was cut from the hunting pack for being gun shy, which is why mine was cut.  Very few hunters will take the time to do desensitization exercises so they will tolerate the sound of the gun being discharged.  They also seem to be impervious to pain while on scent.  Mine has cut herself up on fencing and such, and doesn't seem to notice until it is all over-then she sits and licks at it, and you rarely hear her cry about it.
