What is Toby?

    What is Toby?

Hello, this past December we fostered this big guy.  He was 65 pounds and really lean.  He had really long legs and erect ears.  People who didn't know much about dogs assumed he was Kiya's (my basenji) daddy and she was a puppy since they had a similar shape, although massively different size.  My husband and I had fun trying to guess what we thought he was.  We didn't have much luck.  Here are the only photos of him that I have.

Oh wow, he is one gorgeous fella!

He is most likely one of those dogs that is so mixed you can't really tell.  Is he black or more of a blueish color?  He looks blue in some pictures, and black in the others.

In the first one, I sort of see Weimaraner but not in the others.  I don't know if a weim mix could have perfectly erect ears, like that, though, since Weims have sort of "houndish" ears...?

He's actually black.  If you look at him in really good light it looks light there is a faint brown mixed into the black, but for the most part he looks solid black.  The original owner told us pharaoh hound/shar pei.  He is obviously not part shar pei.  It's possible he could be part pharaoh hound, though it seems unlikely since they aren't at all common around here.  He is quite striking though, I'm very glad we were able to get him into a wonderful home.

He reminds me of a Thai Ridgeback, but these are sooo rare I doubt that he could be part.  I agree about the Pharoah Hound too.  Whatever he is, he's gorgeeeous!

How bout German shepherd, Pittie, maybe a little bit o' lab and some hound thrown in [:)]

Looks like the ears/head shape could be from shepherd, the coat color/length would be from Pittie, as well as the eyes, the color/body shape from the Lab, and the slenderness from some sort of hound, maybe Pharoah or something similar...

I agree that the first thing that popped into my head was Thai Ridgeback without the back ridge or wrinkles, but of course, they are very rare [:)]

My first thought was he looks like Peruvian Inca Orchid mix, but they are even rarer than Pharaoh Hounds and, I believe, Thai Ridgebacks.

As I looked at the other pics, tho, he reminded me of  Pharaoh Hound, excpet for the color.

he looks a lot like a thai ridgeback! Does he have a ridge? they are pretty rare...so i don't know

He's a beautiful dog isn't he?  Nope, no ridge, although that seems to be the breed most think he resembles.  Just goes to show that mutts can be just as gorgeous as their purebred cousins.

I see pharaoh hound, he is stunning!!!!

My first impression from the first pic was part Great Dane, just from the expression. Other pics made me think of dobie, though 65 pounds is kind of heavy for a dobie. He has such clean, strong lines, that it is hard for me to imagine him as a heinz-57 mongrel. I don't think there's any lab in him. The tail is wrong for that. Could he be a mix of Dane and Dobie? He has excellent posture in the sit.

Dane/Dobe wouldn't make sense - neither of those guys have prick ears naturally and those ears aren't cropped.  That's why I was thinking he might have some GSD in him, to get the ears like that.  And I've seen plenty of lab mixes that have whippy tails like that, just look at any Lab/Pitty mix.  I think Dobe is possible, but you'd need something like Lab or Pit to make the face a little blockier like it is....but I dunno, something about those cheek bones remind me a lot of Pit.  The fur's also a teency teency bit too long for something like Dane/Dobie as you can see it ridge up in several places and the tail fur's a bit longer, hence the GSD or Lab or both possibility...

I love trying to figure these out...so much fun [:D]

That dog is without a doubt, pharoh hound/shar pei. As soon as I looked at the first pic, I saw shar pei. That is where the purple on his tongue comes from.

The Toby comments (Toby is the dad, etc) crack me up. People thought that my Walker Hound was the mom of my sister's Bassett Hound.

    I love it!

I have no idea, but I have to say that is one gorgeous dog! Wow!!!
