Origin of the ridgeback dog in Asia

Dear All,

I've just joined in this forum. Introduce myself at fisrt, I live in Hanoi, Vietnam. I'm a dog lover, especially interested in the ridgeback dog.

You should know that the ridgeback dog currently devides in 2 types: 1 is Rhodesian Ridgeback dog from Africa and another comes from Asia.

Though decades ago, Thailands has advertisied for the Thai Ridgeback dog (TRD) as their national royal dog. However, in my point of view, the original of this breed is not clear.

In Phu Quoc island, Vietnam - an island located in the Gulf of Siam - about 300 km far from the Thailand has another of type of ridgeback dog. We called them as Phu Quoc Ridgeback dog (PRD).

This type had been breeded in our country from hundreds years. You can see the pictures of them (PRD) and consider with the TRD to see the difference.

And I will very happy if anyone could give me the information on the original of the ridgeback dog in Asia. Notes that I've read more advertising for the TRD in websites.

Chao and welcome to the forum!

In reference to the Thai or Asian Ridgeback, there is very little information available that I've been able to find. I did a very cursory research into the breeds because I thought they were very interesting. They are certainly very beautiful dogs. Thank you for sharing the pics.

I have seen 2 of those dogs down in tucson, AZ when I was picking up my dog from a boarding facilty. I saw a male and a female, they where both really nice dogs but as soon a my dog zoe came out from the back the male dog went crazy. I think it was because akitas have pointed ears and tails erected over them looking all dominant so it might have P.O the other dog..Still they are pretty good looking dogs. I have never seen one since
