    Yorkshire Terrier pups

My daugther (14) has been asking for a yorkie pup for about 2 yrs now and I've finally told her I would look into the pup.  How are they with staying home by themselves.  I work 3 days a work 9-2....other than that someone is home all the time.

    How about potty training?  Easy/Hard?

Can we take the pup camping with us?

Any info/pic you want to share would be wonderful!

    Thanks, Laurie

Yorkies are wonderful and easy to train little dogs.  The only problem is finding a good breeder.  Your will pay almost $2000 for a health tested yorkie from a breeder who knows what they are doing.  Make shure you ask the breeder if they do health testing befor breeding, most likely if they do then they are knolageble about the breed and will stay in contact with you as the pup grows incase any problems arise.  Most good breeder give a health gurentee so that you know your gettting exactly what your looking for.  Camping should not be a problem and if you get you pup into puppie classes he/she will make a wonderful little pet.  You could also look into your local yorki rescue and they could help you locate a dog who is in need of a home.

We had a yorkie many years ago. She was every bit as much of a "real " dog as any big dog was. Tehy are amazingly resilient. Originally they were bred to chase rats in sewers so they can be quite fearless.

Ours went camping with us but we did have a few issues with sticks etc in her coat. Being so low to the ground, they tend to collect grass and sticks and such. As long as you are willing to brush her out you will be fine.

Ours tolerated heat and cold well. We did have to shovel her a place in the snow to do her business outside.

I don't htink I have had another dog that was that easy to house break and that was in the days before crates were so common. I didn't crate train her at all.

WE did find that she was a people dog. and was not happy unless she could sleep in the same room as we were in at night. She was happy on a towel on the floor.

When we moved to our new house which had bedrooms on boht the first and second floor, she paced about the first night and finally settled on sleeping on the stair steps. I think it was her way of protecting both the kids and the parents[;)] She slept there until she was 13 years old.

I intend to get another yorkie someday when my kids who think they need a big dog are no longer living at home.

One more thing...do your research on a breeder. WE had neighbotrs who had problems with two yorkies being microcephalic...bad breeding. Some breeders try to keep the dogs tiny and that is not always a good thing. Our girl was about 7 pounds.

Yorkies have hair, not fur and need to be washed often or they get a "lank greasy hair" odor which I've noticed among the Yorkies kept as pets I've met. The show Yorkies of course get a bath every week along with the conditioning, hot oil, and various other things lol!

Sweet little dogs tho...they seem to love their people very much!

We have yorkies, 4 of them. They are wonderful dogs. Easy to train, and have had no problem with leaving them to go to work. I have posted pics of our youngest on this sight. We bred him. To us he is a picture, all 4lbs of him. They love to travel & love their people. We never had a professional trainer for any of them and all are well behaved just with the training we provide. They are not yappers as so many people have asked us about. It's their job to bark at noises or people who come close, but at a word they quiet immediatly.
