    Pitbull Information

Does anyone have any information regarding the pitbull breed, or any helpful links? My boyfriend and I were looking to adopt a pitbull but we wanted to find out some information about the breed before we do. Also, I have a 12 lb, 1 1/2 year old yorkie that I am afraid the pitbull might attack one day if we decide to adopt one. Obviously the dogs would meet before adoption, but I was just wondering if pitbulls were prone to snap and attack another dog for no reason? The lady at the animal shelter was kind of leaning towards the fact that that could possibly happen.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

these are two sites that have a good bit of information about pit bulls. there is a possibility that a pit bull could become dog aggressive. that is what they were originally bred for. usually this will happen sometime between the ages of  2 and 5.

that said, there are many people on this forum that have multiple dog households that include pits and mutiple pit households that have never had a problem. if you adopt a pit, socialize him/her well with other dogs from the time you get her/him. this will reduce the likelyhood of them becoming dog aggressive. pits are generally very sweet and loving dogs.

good for you for wanting to adopt!

raise 'em right and they'll turn out right, just like with any dog.

i've got two large pit-mixes who are tough mutts, but not aggressive and very sweet with small dogs. they have a 5lb sister who they sometimes play with, and have never harmed - she regularly steals food from them too.

but like with any large and possibly stubborn breed, don't get one unless you're confident that you can be the boss as you raise him/her. if you're the top dog, they'll follow your direction.

I like pits! I have never met one I didn#%92t like!

They are like any other dog, treat them like you want them to behave! That means put a puppy on the counter expect said puppy to eat off it on a regular basis when they are full grown! Cant change the rules in midstream ya know!

A lot of folks yelled at me for having a wolf hybrid, she is the STAR of the neighborhood! 500 bucks in training, lots of work and TLC yeah its WORTH it!

American Pit Bull Terriers are a great breed.  They are loving, affectionate, loyal, and comical.  They are full of energy and can go and go.
They are also very strong dogs, and can have a tendency to be dog aggressive.

Good for you for thinking of adopting.  One benefit to this is, if you adopt an older dog (2-3+ years) the shelter/rescue will probably be able to tell you whether or not the dog shows aggression towards other dogs.  A pit should NEVER show aggression towards humans.

It takes a lot to own a pit, and you must be prepared to train them consistently, and be ready to advocate for the breed.

Sheprano gave excellent resources .  Have fun researching!

i was raised and  have raised and rescued pits in the ;past my last male was the sweetest of the bunch he had a thing  for kittens he mothered them and  cuddled them  he would adopt any small stray  that would  let him with all his mass of muscle and size to love them  to no end i always say your dogs will be exactly as  you want them to be put  your time in soclizing training and exersizing will bring the best  out  of the both of you i really recomend agility with  APBT they love  to work with you at this and its a great way to socalize them with other dogs from a young age.
