What is a Heinz 57 dog?

A mutt with an undiscernable background [:)]    'Heinz 57', I believe, has something to do with 57 different breeds and ketchup.

lol.. when they came out with heinz 57 it was a mixture of things added to catsup to make it.  so a dog with a mixed background it a heinz 57.  i haven't heard them called that for years :)

Actually, sorry to be a big nerd but the phrase "Heinz 57" originally comes from the Heinz slogan "57 Varities," referring to their various products from ketchup to pickles to sauces etc. In reference to dogs it usually means there are too many breeds in the mix to really pick any out.

I always thought it was like Jones said, from the 57 varieties of Heinz products.  I hardly ever see a Heinz 57 dog anymore though, it's mostly purebreds and some crossbreeds around here.  I kind of miss those "gosh, what IS that?" type of dogs!

Hienz did have 57 varieties and the term has been in use since my Grandfather's day back in the late twenties and throughout the depression.  It does mean that you can't really figure out what all went into a dog's background, but they were a mutt.  Kind of funny that all mixed breeds were known as heinz 57 or curbstone setters then, but now they are designer dogs with big price tags-Schnoodles, Cockapoos, Pekapoos, etc.
