What does your dog respond best to?

What does your dog respond best to?

When training, what works best as a reward for you puppers?

    *Food

    *Toy

    *Praise(verbal)

    *Praise(physical)

With Sam I'd have to say he could care less about food. He's kind of like "Yea, thats ok. Can I have more? If not, no big deal. Not even a small deal." But if I get really high-pitched and excited, and then rub his ears or roll him over for a belly rub, he get's like "OMG! YEAAA!!! Whatever I did for this, I must do again....only faster!!". He treats his toy's about the same as food. It's whatever for my goof.

Taz on the other hand, only responds to food. Not kibble or Milkbones, bit's of chicken or hot dog's work for Mr. Spoiled. Toy's just get him worked up, and then no responce at all. Praise(unless form my Mom) is worthless....high-pitched vioces, ear rubs, nothing. He doesn't even really care for belly rubs...weird dog! LOL!

Cheese and praise. Casey would jump through hoops for a piece of cheese =], but more than that - he really just wants to make me happy... he's such a momma's boy

I must correct myself on Taz....his favorite red ball is the best thing to get Taz to do anything!

Dahlia is a food hound.  She will do ANYTHING for a treat, especially what our trainer calls "doggy crack" (Pet Botanics rolled meat, cut up into tiny pieces for training treats).  She also does respond fairly well to physical praise, but definitely responds even better to treats.

    The Beagles, Food

    The Leo, Praise (physical)

The Mix? nothing...she will flip you off no matter what LMBO.

Food, especially cheese or fresh meat.

Emma works for food and tuggies. I only use tuggies when I really want to get her "up" though.

Ena gets bored of food. She wants to be "slapped" on her nakie butt. Physical praise, with some food in there to make me feel betterWink

Chyna & Brinxx work for food.

Shooter will work for food & physical praise.

Schatzi works for food, sometimes.  Other times, she gives you the finger as she blows by.

Bevo works for anything.  I use both verbal & physical praise as the main reward for him.  I can get him very "up" with food, but I have to find that very delicate middle ground between "up" & out of control when food is involved.  It's just much easier to tell him what a good boy he is, & give him an ear rub.

Maze lives for verbal praise and her homemade cookies. She could care less about meat, or pets but if I have a pocket full of her "crack" cookies then she'll do what ever I ask.. Oh! And strawberries. She'll will literally jump through hoops for strawberries. I tested this, it's true. Smile. Lol.

Although we haven't even attempted formal training being that we just got candy recently and are still in the housetraining stage she gets and is getting more used to:

     Marrow treats

Physical praise (rub behind her ears, she LOVES it)

Verbal praise (I tell her good girl while she's pottying)

She has now gotten to the point that when she does her business outside and I'm not standing directly next to her to pop the treat in her mouth she comes running directly to me looking at me like shes saying "ok lady i did what you wanted wheres my damn treat"!!! LOL!!!

Neiko: food first for most training exercises. For herding, just letting him work the sheep is reward enough. If he does something I don't like, I block his access to the sheep.

Lily: food and praise pretty much equally. Lily lives for affection and attention so praise works just as good as treats

Abbie: food. Praise is a distant 2nd, but you can still see that it works.

Bug will work for ANY kind of food you give her. She likes lots of verbal praise too.

Bella likes some food but its not as much of a driver for her as verbal praise is.

Dublin, Finn and Kasia are my food hounds. Harlow is an ACD who works to please and for praise, however, food works too! :]

Rosco - praise and food.  heck he'll do an entire rally course for a single kibble.

Lexi - praise and food. She loves attention and doing things right.

Luna - food and some toys. She doesn't care at all if you are happy, so it depends on what she wants most at that moment. She also loves the sheep so with herding we are using praise and encouragement to stay after the sheep. If you cheer her on while herding she is in 7th heaven.
