I hate to say it but I fear Pet Friend has ulterior motives here -- why such an open-ended question?

But I wish I knew why "Pet Friend" was collecting information.

ha! i thought i was the only one that was thinking in that direction, and precicely the reason i did not answer the question...

    Me too....hence the non-answering

Without reading all the previous posts I would answer this way, however much my budget and credit cards allowed. If the dog was suffering in a terrible way I would end it now.

    Has Pet friend been back?

There is not a monetary value, but it definitely comes down to quality of life. Something I don't take lightly.

This might sound mean, but I would spend enough to make the dog comfortable and spoil them relentlessly for his or her remaining days.  I've seen my sister and her cat (long since deceased now) suffer through months long of surgeries which resulted in pain and discomfort for Goldie, thousands of dollars mount up (close to $3000 for the surgeries and chemo) and she still only made it about 5 months.  Considering the recoveries from 2 surgeries she spent a lot of it in pain I'm sure.

I don't find the question that odd, I've delt with the same question myself with one of my prior goldens.  The answer for me was to surround myself with good a good vet and get them to the right vet hospital, then balance the cost vs. the quality of life for the animal.  After numerous tests going to specialists, it was determined that Mac had what was referred to as doggie MS.  The thing that made the decision so difficult was that he was so bright and alert... the problem was that his back end did work anymore.  After several thousands of dollars and yes even considering a contraption for his back end with wheels, it wasn't fair to him.  It was a horrible decision, but one that had to be made.

I don't know what the motive for the question was, but I don't think I will read anything bad into it and hope that he/she is simply trying to do a good job of dealing with a bad situation.

Not to be judgemental, but there were several responses of, people would spend money only if they could be assured of the outcome.  In my mind, when you decide to own a pet, these issues come along with the territory. Our pets rely on us to do the right thing for them and sometimes right answer is not all ways easy or cheap.

So maybe the question isn't all that off base.
