No restraint system is perfect but letting them ride loose is far too dangerous for the dog and the humans.
I completely agree, but sadly DH doesn't worry about such things, so it's a major source of contention in our house. No amount of pleading or sharing scary examples changes his behavior. It will take all the strength I have not to cry "I told you so!" if/when something happens when Ruby is in DH's truck. She does stay in the backseat, but she's loose. I fret about it all the time.
If Ruby rides with me in my car, then I can control things, so she wears a harness that has a thing that clips into the seatbelt receptacle. If I had a larger vehicle, I'd use a crate. Her safety is very important, but frankly, it's more because I don't want her bugging me by trying to get in the front seat or snuffling at the side of my head while I'm driving.
