October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

It’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

Sadly so many wonderful dogs end up in shelters so if you are thinking of adopting a dog be sure to think about a local shelter. Did you know that 85% of shelter dogs are purebred and many also have puppies too. The key is finding the right dog that will fit your lifestyle and most shelters have a knowledgeable staff that can help you and your family find the perfect dog.

What you can do for shelter dogs?

Adopt: As we said, when considering adding a best friend to your family, open up your options to shelters and rescues. There are so many dogs that are waiting for their forever home right now. If you are interested in a specific breed, look into possible rescues in your area that have wonderful dogs that are waiting for you.

Fostering: There is also fostering a great way to help out. Shelters get so over populated that fosters homes are much needed. You take in a dog or puppy and give them lots of love and proper training so that the can get ready for their forever home. It’s not easy to give them up but when you see how happy the new family is and that you saved a dog’s life it’s very rewarding.

Volunteer: Can’t adopt or foster, you can always volunteer! Shelter dogs need lots of exercise, dog walkers are a great help to shelters to get the dogs out and about. Grooming, cleaning and overall shelter work is also much appreciated.

The ASPCA has so much great information if you are thinking of adopting a dog. Check out this link and help a shelter in your area.

Shelters need help, even if you can't adopt or foster, giving your time in other ways can help save dogs. Even if it's just making phone calls for the shelter by doing vet and reference checks for potential adopters. Organizing food drives and other types of fundraisers is very helpful.
