What is the story behind your dog's name?

Harley Quinn (Batman) on the left. My baby Harley  Quinn on the right! Can you see the resemblance?

When deciding what your dog's name, it can be much like deciding the name of a human child. This name, whatever you may choose, will stay with your pup from the moment they come home that first time, to the moment they leave your side. Choosing some silly name, for many, is out of the question. For me, I love anything involving Batman. From the 60's show, to the newest movies, I love it all! So when I was visiting the shelter to find a forever friend, I had a feeling that the name I chose would have something to do with Batman. As soon as I saw my playful little pup bouncing around the yard of the shelter I knew that she would be names after the bubbly ( and sometimes crazy) Harley Quinn! Now that she has grown I even see a resemblance. (But that may just be me being a crazy dog mom! )

So now I want to know! What is the story behind your dog's name? :)

Shadow, RiP was named that because he would be so close behind that he would step on our heels.

Hot Shot was named by the breeder and he was 3+ when we rescued him.  We knew the breeder and he removed Hot from an abusive home.  We left his name since there were so many trust issues to work on.

Rocky was going to be Lucky, he was found on a very nice persons porch in a snow storm, this was the same evening we had to help Shadow over the bridge.  "Guy" went straight to a foster that same night and she posted his sweet face on petfinder.  We saw it 2 weeks after he had been found and couldn't resist.  It wasn't until contacting the foster that we realized the back story.  Once we got him home, we kept calling him Lucky but after a few days Hubby started calling him Rocky cause he would  use those big pappy paws to "box" hubby so he would pet him or pick him up.  He still loves to "box".

Awww, @Shadowsgin thank you for sharing! You have such fun and great reasons for each one of your names! :)  Especially love the meaning behind Rocky's name!

My current Basset Hound was named by her breeder, and I just left it that way because she was 2 when I adopted her...Buffy the Cookie Slayer (?).   But Biscotti RIP was more interesting.  I adopted her from the shelter shortly before Christmas and we spent days trying to figure out a name that she responded to with no luck.  I had lots of goodies laying around at that time and spotted a package of almond biscotti I had bought for a treat for my son.  It dawned on me that that would make a cute and unusual name for this little Basset....so, Natale Biscotti it was...a sweet Italian Christmas cookie!

Sorry to hear about the lose of your Biscotti, but the story of her name brought a smile to my face reading! Thank you! :)

Gabby was named Gabby because she's very gabby. :)  Talks all the time at us, at the other dogs, at her toys.  She likes to express herself in Gabbyspeak.  She's not barking.  It's more like baby babble but from a dog.

Rex was a desperation name after several weeks of not being able to decide.  Short and sweet.  He is kind of regal looking.

Belle was also a desperation name.  My husband and I have a terrible time agreeing on dog names.  There must be twenty zillion dogs named Belle but our Belle is unique,  so I don't mind if her name is common. She doesn't care what we call her.   Wait for it.......

Just don't call her late to dinner. :)

It's fun to hear the "history" behind the different names!  Marty, I like the cookie-theme in your explanations.  That reminds me of one of the cutest names from this forum -- the little Boston Terrier, Souffle.  I just love that name!

Jackie, we're like you guys -- agreement on a name is near impossible for us.  Ruby came from the shelter with the name "Tig" (bleh!).  In line with my fondness for Souffle's name, I wanted something food-related, like Brulee, but DH thought her coloring wasn't right for that name.  We wanted something "girly" sounding, since she's a pittie mix and we felt she'd be misjudged if her name sounded too tough.  Somehow Ruby came up, and neither of us strongly objected to it, so that was it.  DH calls her Ruby the Warrior Princess, because the fact is, she's NOT girly, but she lives like a princess!

When we got Tonka as a puppy, we knew he'd grow to be a BIG boy, so we wanted something suitable.  We finally came up with Tonka (as in truck).  His full name, using the breeder's protocol, was Aurora's Mighty Tonka.  Every year since his passing, we donate an extra large Tonka toy dump truck to our shelter's annual auction.  We fill the back of it with children's books, crayons, stickers, etc.  It always receives lots of bids, and it makes me feel good to know that a little boy (or girl!) is playing with a toy that honors his memory, because he LOVED little kids.

Tracy, I love that you donate a big Tonka truck full of goodies in Tonka's name. (((hugs)))

I'm a huge Dave Matthews fan and "Grux" was a term the band used for something really cool or neat. Their one album was called Big Whiskey and the Gru Grux King. My Great Dane, Hurley got his name from the show "Lost" after the big laid back guy who was a character on the show. (That was the name he came with so I just kept it)
