Have you tried clicker training?

I thought it was silly at first, but when I finally gave it a try, it worked wonderfully.  Sally seems to really enjoy it.  I don't need to carry the clicker everywhere with me, but I'll take in on walks sometimes if we are going to be doing a lot of training in a distracting situation.  She could perform any of the tasks I've taught her clicker training without the clicker, but it is an effective tool, so I choose to use it.  My husband uses it too, BTW.

I just say don't knock it 'til ya try it.....

I'm clicker training my rabbit, but haven't tried it with my dog yet. I'm warming up in preparation for the akita puppy I will one day be bringing up. So, I don't really know how to vote on the poll. Yes I've tried it, but not on my dog. [:D] I've been thinking I'd like to try it with Kit in attempt to help calm him, but I haven't been game to try yet. I've been thinking I could use it as a signal that people are backing out of his space. He's very sensitive about his personal space and panics if people push him too much too quickly. Anyway, I'm going to wait until I've learnt a bit more and got somewhere with my rabbit.

Clicker training is not gender specific.  In fact, Gary Wilkes is nearly as well known a clicker trainer as is Karen Pryor.  What I think may be more gender specific is the desire to "show the dog who's boss" attitude that seems, at least in my classes, to be more prevalent in men.

I agree! More traditional training techniques (ie choke chains) also seem to be more prevalent among those who are paranoid about their dog being "dominant".

Some trainers have been known to train chickens with a clicker!  I haven't, but I did train my horse to "wait" at the stall door until I give him permission to walk out.
I think it would be fun to hear what your rabbit can do!!!

On another pet discussion list I'm on we were recently talking about clicker training ferrets. I also have a desire to clicker train (or have my parents clicker train) their cats to not hate me so much. Because they despise me and it makes me sad. [:(]
