Re: Tracking and Scent Work - Can it be self taught?
There is a SchH tracking web site I use that fits with how my TD trains and gives step-by-step instruction.
Please, do share! :D I think its good to have an actual person there to explain things to you and show you how things work, but if you're just wanting to have some fun, I say go for it! I know its hard to find other people who are interested in that kind of thing, depending on where you are.

Re: Food vs. Environmental Allergies

At work we usually notice that itchy ears and feet usually equal food allergy, but I'd say if she seems to do it only seasonally and not all the time, maybe try some benadryl. Sometimes that's not enough to kick it, and you may have to up it to a steroid (we usually try "Temaril-P" an antihistamine + steroid) to get things under control, then try to keep it controlled with just an antihistamine of some kind. Some dogs do better with different antihistamines, just like we do. ;)

Re: Frontline/Advantix and swimming

Frontline is supposed to be waterproof, but I do know that the reps say that every time a dog is bathed/swims that a "layer" is washed off each time. At least thats how they put it. So my thinking is that the more you bathe/let swim, the less it works. I've never had a problem, but usually my guys don't go swimming or get baths more than 2 times a month. I'd just keep an eye out. ;) I'm not sure about Advantix, as we don't really sell it much.

Re: Teaching Fetch

Do they like tug? That's how Rafe ended up fetching. Before he would run after the ball, but never bring it back. After doing some schutzhund drive work and tugging with balls and jute tugs, etc., he started chasing it and bringing it back on his own because he wanted me to tug with him. I think some dogs enjoy the chase, but enjoy tugging more. ;) Just an idea, and it might be a little easier than backchaining if it works. Or, you could get 50 chuck-it balls, then you'd only have to go down

Re: Teaching Fetch
Maze LOVES tug. I use it as her reward in Agility. Sandy has no tug. Lol. I think I may buy a ball on a rope and try and use tugging as a reward when she brings it back, before I throw it again. Hmmm.. Now to find a place on the coast that sells toys like that...
Sounds like that would work for Maze, at least. And you can always make your own ball on a string, too, if you can find a decent ball. Or break down and order one... ;)

Re: Tracking problem

I was having the same issue with Rafe. He was just blowing through the track, and would actually follow it pretty precisely, but it just wasn't satisfactory for a schutzhund track. I'm still working on it, but I think we're getting better. Like Buster said, I think letting the track age helps, that way there isn't so much scent floating around. Does he still have the deep nose while he's tracking, even though he's going fast? Rafe always had the nose down but still blasted

Sport Books & Videos

Anyone know of any good ones? I'm looking for mainly schutzhund stuff, but anything that might relate would be cool. I can't wait to get the Michael Ellis vidoes that are supposed to be coming out. Ugh! But anyhoo, just curious if anyone has seen any good videos that they'd recommend. More looking for the videos than books, but I'm always up for a good book.

Re: The super clicker?

That's what I was thinking, as well, though I'm still trying to figure out what would be best to use...lol! I could just strap it to my waist since my dogs are a little shorter... ;) I was also wondering about the reward. Looked like they were making the dogs touch it a few times before rewarding...

The super clicker?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDyrJfIxBEk Anyone seen this, heard of it, or know where to get it?? It looks great. I did a google search but couldn't really find anything on it.

Re: What training method do you recommend....Why?

I use a lot of different stuff from various people. Clicker training is great for teaching new, more "difficult" behaviors. I love it. And I think they learn so much faster because they have to think it out on their own instead of being "shown" by us luring them to do this or that. I love watching my dogs think and work things out for themselves. I also use a lot of prey drive in my obedience work to make it more "showy." They're always a lot more watchful and peppy
