I'm leaving, at least for the time being.

I came originally to this forum to help people who were having problems with things I've had some experience with, and also to get help for things I have trouble with. It's been a very long time since I've engaged in either of those two things, so I think it's time for me to step away. I've written and deleted this post several times, but I've always said I wouldn't do the "Goodbye Cruel Community" flounce post, so I won't. I'll keep my account open and

Re: afraid of car

Did this come on all of a sudden? What was his behavior in the car like before it began?

Re: Parvo in mutts

Um yeah that's a load of hooey. Parvo is a virus and it doesn't matter what the breed or breeds, all dogs are susceptible. Personally, I would not trust a breeder that held that view, it's kind of bizarre.

Mine wipe their paws on a mat before coming in to the house. Edit: I'm seriously thinking of training Marlowe to be the Poop Detective in the yard so I can scoop it all up and not miss any. He's a bit enamored of the poopsicles this time of year and I'd love to harness that power for good instead of evil!

Re: The Role of Reinforcement (Reward)

I thought you were referring to the stopping of play, which is removing something.

Re: How much attention and training is too much?

Recent research has shown that dogs continually given behavioral enrichment throughout their lives have a lower chance of developing canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

The new rescue I just got seems to be more affection motivated than food motivated. She'll do anything for attention/affection.
I am so glad you brought that up.....emotionally starved dogs will crave attention and interaction more than food....in my experience anyway....and DPU can attest to that, also.....and if one deals with dogs that have been starved (food and attention) bringing food as a reward into the game is

**Edited by me and I am now stepping out of this one. Have fun everyone.**

Re: the role of punishment

If the sound, in and of itself with nothing else ever added on, decreases a behavior, it's a punishment. If it doesn't, it's not. Unless you make it into a conditioned punisher (much like the sound of a clicker is a conditioned reinforcer) by using that sound and then applying an aversive stimulus enough times. This is what that magical sound of the choke chain clinking is to a lot of dogs--a conditioned punisher.
