Re: Not scared to be scared

Personally, I belive that how quickly a dog "recovers" from a handler mistake/miscommunication/tough correction is mostly determined by the temperament of the dog. That said, the training method would also take into account the temperament of the dog, so hopefully the handler can reliably predict how a dog will react to any reward or punishment and that a mistake would not be enough to ruin or shut down the dog. I've made "mistakes" with Kenya where I've vocalized my frustration

Re: Never been crated...

Kenya is somewhat like this. I have crated her on and off, way more often not, but when I do it's no big deal and it doesn't matter if the crate is in the car, the house, someone else's house, a dog show...she just goes in and lies down. I think she really likes to "den" (when I don't crate her at home she makes a den under my big desk) and feels very safe and secure in the crate, especially if it's covered.

Re: No Mindless chatter???

I am tired and blistered but got a lot done today! I've been doing chores for 12 hours. I washed all my curtains, upholstery, towels, and dog bedding, I cleaned all the window sills and blinds, wiped out light fixtures, dusted, vacuumed, sorted through bills and papers, I think I'm on my 6th load of laundry, totally cleaned out and vacuumed my van (had to take dog kennels out and put seats back in), raked the property again (DH helped with this), hung all the clean curtains, did some general

Re: Dogs you've had and how you got them.

Kenya - My first dog. I applied to the GSD rescue but they didn't have anything that matched (this was after years of research and even moving to a new house just so we could get a dog). However the rescue person knew of a dog returned to a breeder that would be a good match. I got in contact with the breeder and she gave me Kenya. She was 3.5 years old when I adopted her. The breeder owned her mother (who died today at age 15) and the breeder's friend owned the father (who died a few years

Re: Good vibes for Kenya

She is fine all night and was fine this morning. She's here under my desk at work. No dogs allowed, but we work in the back corner of the basement of the library, and she is small (well 50lbs) and quiet so even the people in the next cubicle don't know she's here. Confinement will not be an issue for her, she has always loved crates. When we travel, she always gets her crate and prefers to stay in there unless she's on my lap. I've just always figured that since she's good

Re: TGIF Chat

OMG this week has SUCKED! DH's grandma died, travel and the funeral was stressful, the father of a guy I know (and husband of my my mom's friend) hung himself, Nikon is limping again but b/c of the funeral I lost my last vacation day and the money I'd saved for his x-rays, our dog training club has major drama going on and is basically non-existant right now, last night Kenya eats the sextuple dose of anti-convulsants intended for a 250lb man, this morning I overslept. I need a margarita

Re: Good vibes for Kenya

Cita, Kenya is the same way. However her anxiety is more neurologically rooted, it's not really the same as separation anxiety (she does not howl or get destructive when I leave). So I can see where in some cases, the crate can be worse, but in other cases better.

Re: Ena Bean spins in circles

Kenya is a spinner too, one of the neurotic behaviors she has. Basically, if she is not sleeping or doing something else that you tell her to do, she will spin. She stops the second you command her to do something else or just say "eh, stop", but if her mind has nothing *else* to focus on, she spins. I used to be really frustrated with it, but lately I am less and less. This is one of three or four neurotic behaviors that she has. I know if she had the choice she would not be doing it.
