  • Merry Christmas!

What a nice Christmas we had. My daughter and I spent lots of time baking and just hanging out together (she's 15); we had lots of time with family, great food, lots of laughter. We enjoyed the dogs and they enjoyed the festivities and all the company. They were well-behaved and a joy to have around.

Tonight my husband, daughter and I just sat around and watched movies, ate popcorn, and relaxed. It was really nice. I brought up some grooming supplies and ended up cleaning out ears on all 4 dogs and brushing out the 3 poodles. They enjoyed the attention although the poodles do not enjoy getting the hair pulled out of their ears! They're good about it though. We do it often enough that it doesn't get too bad.  I've never in my life seen such hairy ears though. I guess I didn't realize how much hair they actually got in their ears. Lacie, my black poodle, has HUGE ear cavities.  Just amazes me.

Tomorrow I might bathe the poodles, although I don't think I'll do all three.  That is so time consuming. Drying and brushing out takes forever.  None of them need a groom right now, but they are dirty and nails need to be trimmed and dremeled.  Guess I'll concentrate on nails and bathing Keisha, who is absolutely filthy.  Rex has class tomorrow night so perhaps I will bathe him too.  I don't know.  I think I'll just play it by ear.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!!

  • Rexxie redeemed himself big time!!! Yay!!

I am so proud of my boy!!  We switched from the Thursday night class to the Wednesday night class because the Thursdays just didn't end up working out; I would have had to miss 2 classes in a row and I just didn't want to do that.  Anyway, we went to class on Wed and it was really fun.  They were a week behind our class so we got a repeat of class #2, which was just fine with me.

The week before the instructor had us introduce our dogs to the concept of 'down'. Well, Rex was having none of that. Long story short - at the end of the class, I was sweating bullets and he was still being very naughty and stubborn about the whole thing.

Well, we practiced all week long and it became a game.  You know, I read somewhere that brown poodles are considered the clowns of the breed.  That is the truth, let me tell you.  Rex now thinks 'down' is the best thing ever.  He literally throws himself down and it's just hilarious.

In class on Wed night he did so well that the instructor told about our previous weeks experience and pointed out how practicing really makes a difference.  Then she had me demonstrate with Rex.  What a proud moment!  He was so good. He is so full of exhuberance and joy - he just prances along beside me and is so darned cute.  Then we went to the doggy store and we practiced in there too.  He did good but he still cringes away from people when they try to pet him.  His fear issues are deeply ingrained.  I hope with time he gets better - won't be good at a show if while standing for exam he cringes away from the judge and runs behind my legs!!

This morning I took him for a long walk and he did very well, although he'd love to surge ahead and just explore.  He was pretty good though (training collar always helps!).

This afternoon I am taking Lacie to town for a walk and then Keisha will go with my daughter and I when she walks her dog after school.  Takes a lot of work to get these dogs exercised every day!  I let them out in the pen to run this morning for a while and they ran full bore around that thing for 10 solid minutes!  They just had a ball.  It's really cold so I didn't want to leave them out there for too long but they sure enjoy themselves. They absolutely love the snow.  I try to let them out in the pen twice a day for 10 minutes or so.  Rex and Keisha don't seem to mind the cold but Lacie is ready to come in.

    Have a good day everyone!

  • Hairy dogs

Oh boy - tonight was grooming night. I did not give them baths but instead, spent the night brushing and brushing, trimming top knots, trimming feet, trimming nails. I cannot beleive how fast the hair grows on these dogs. I should go into some sort of business selling poodle hair pillows or something!

Lacie had a dreadlock behind her left ear and it took forever to get it out. I brush them all the time but I must have just completely missed this area. It was awful and we spent a LONG time working on that particular area.  She's such a patient girl.

Earlier in the day my daughter and I took Jazzy and Rex for a walk. We brought the dogs to my daughter's house and walked in her neighborhood. It was so cold.  I am trying to get Rex out and about to practice heeling and sitting.  He is doing pretty well but he is definately a puller.  I am going back to the pinch collar because he is pulling my shoulder to the point where it actually hurts. So we will use some reinforcement for a while.

I brought Lacie to Petco last night and she was so good. I had her in a sit-stay and this guy came over, talked to her, held out his hand, petted her - and she didn't budge.  He looked a little puzzled and I told him she was in a sit-stay and he was impressed. I told her "okay" and she went right up to him to be petted.  I was very impressed as well!

I went back to buying puppy food for Rex.  He was not eating at all and I worry about him. I bought a bag of the expensive puppy food for large breed dogs and he loves it.  I am mixing 1/2 can of the canned food in with it for a while.  He is not gaining weight like he should, mainly because he hates the food I have them on (it is a high quality food but he just doesn't like it).  I want to show him and I need him looking good.  So back to the really expensive stuff!

Rex has class on Thursday night - his 3rd one. I am looking forward to showing off how well he has learned his "down" cue. Last week it was just embarrassing! He was so naughty. He did his heeling and sitting wonderfully, and even did great for his sit-stay. But then we began 'downs'.  Well, let me tell you - there was no way.  He was not doing it.  At one point the instructor had to help me 4 times - after basically forcing him down and praising the begeebers out of him, he finally started to get it, although it was still a battle.  I broke a sweat and was exhausted after that class!!  But I think he has it now.  Yea!!

I took some pictures of the dogs by the Christmas tree - they turned out so nice. Check them out on my home page!

  • A new meaning for the term 'hamburger helper'!!

Well, dog class #2 was definately interesting tonight. Things started off badly before we even left - I decided to shave Rex's face and then clip his nails.  I usually dremel them but decided to just do a quick clip. Well, I quicked him and we had blood everywhere.  I barely took any off, but boy - he moved at the wrong moment and we had a gusher.  Blood stop didn't even work.  I had to hold pressure for 10 minutes before a clot formed. Then I bandaged it and off we went.

Rex puts new meaning to the term stubborn.  He would not do a 'down' tonight for anything.  The instructor finally had to come over and work with us.  The big galoop was absolutely, positively not laying down. She pretty much forced him and it took both of us.  We got him down, praised him like crazy, gave him his treat (which there was no way he was eating at that point), and then let him up.  Only to have to repeat it all over again.  I think even the instructor was surprised.  He is very strong and very stubborn.  Whew - I was beat by the time class was over.  I met my husband and youngest daughter at my mother-in-law's house and she had some hamburgers ready for us.  I broke off a piece to give to Rex and thought I'd see if he'd do a down for me.  He took one sniff of that burger and down he went!!  Big brat!!  So we will diligently work on our lessons this week - and I may use hamburger as incentive!  We were not so faithful last week, due to the nasty weather and my rotten cold.

At one point I found myself getting extremely frustrated with Rex tonight. But then I really looked at him, and I could see his frustration and confusion.  I decided right then and there that it was time to get a check on my attitude and to put things in perspective. Because of his background and his fear issues, new situations are hard for Rex to deal with. All in all, he's been doing very well.  I'm proud of him. He'll get this 'down' thing, just like he's conquered all the other fears he's had to deal with.  Mom just needs to learn to do things a little slower with Rex and give him time to comprehend and deal with all this new stuff.  It's a lot for him to absorb - just being with all these people is traumatic enough, and he's handling that very well.

We have been getting a lot of snow and I LOVE it! The poodles responded exactly as I thought they would.  Keisha absolutely loves it. The first day she ran around like a crazy dog, jumping leaping and having a ball.  The minute I open the door she shoots out there like a bullet and runs around like mad.  It's hilarious.

Rex was fearful - he stood there and looked at all that white stuff and then looked at me, like, what the heck is this??  You want me to do it out there?  In that cold stuff?  Are you NUTS????  He walks out there as close to the house as possible and then goes into the rocks and does his job there where the snow isn't deep.  He is so funny. Then he'll suddenly decide that it looks pretty fun out there in the deep stuff, and off he goes at a run, tossing snow in the air with his nose, jumping around.

Lacie took it in stride as she does everything in life.  She likes to bury her snout in the snow and comes up looking so cute.  She's solid black so she looks funny with her white beard and nose.

Well, I'm heading off to bed. I'm off tomorrow and I think it's going to be a grooming day. They all need a brushing, Lacie needs her face shaved, and Keisha needs a bath.

  • Let It Snow!! Lots and lots...

We're supposed to get 4-8 inches of snow this afternoon through tomorrow!!  Smile  I say, bring it on and the more we get the better.  I just love getting these first snows of the season. And I can't wait to see how the spoos do in the snow - this will be the first time that Keisha and Rex have seen snow, and Lacie was only 2-3 months old last year so she didn't get to be out in it much. It should be fun.

My predictions: Keisha will run out there, jump around, bury her head in it, roll around in it - she's just that kind of pup.  Rex will tip-toe out there, and will have to spend some time making sure it won't kill him or anything.  Then he'll be off and running, jumping in the air, and tossing snow with his nose. Lacie will take it in stride - she'll calmly walk out there, do her thing, and then start running around and playing in it. Their personalities are so different, and I just love each of their responses to things. They're so funny.

I cannot put into words how much I love these dogs. They have enriched my life beyond what I can describe in words, and even beyond what I thought was possible. It amazes me that a dog can bring such joy into a life. They ask for so little from us, and the love and total devotion they give in return is astounding. Dog

Oh!  Rex went to his first obedience class on Thursday and he was a very good boy.  I did not have to carry him up the steps!!  The instructor happened to be walking out as I walked in and she pulled him up 3 steps.  I walked up about 6 of them and she stood at the bottom.  He took one look at her and up the rest of the steps he went!  Stick out tongue

As I predicted, all but one of the pups are teeny, tiny little lap dogs weighing in at about 5-10 pounds at the most.  There is a Neufy pup there but he's only 3 months old and pretty tiny yet.  And then there's Rex.  All 60 pounds of him.  And he was so happy! He loved all those little pups!   He got a lot of attention and smiles - everyone had to pet him and feel his kinky hair.  It was so good for him.  As I've mentioned, Rex was pretty unsocialized when we got him at 6 months of age, so he is a little scared of people other than me. He still shys away from my husband and daughter sometimes!  Surprise  He has gotten so much better though, and this class can only help with that.  He handled it pretty well actually.

We worked on heeling and sitting and he did pretty well.  He is definately a puller and I think I will use the pinch collar on him when we practice this week.  I have a sore shoulder and I just cannot tolerate the pulling without extreme pain.  I had to use the pinch on Lacie when I first started her too, but she doesn't need it any more.  They are very strong dogs.

Have a great weekend!!  Think SNOW!!!  Yes
