I had the good fortune to be able to work from home today (thankfully) and was working when I heard Hektor barking in the backyard. I went out to see what he was barking at along with Gunnar and low and behold it was a huge snake about 4 feet long. My response was rather slow and just as I yelled leave it Gunnar went after it and it struck. I at first thought it was a rattlesnake due to the noise it was making and quickly grabbed both dogs and took them into the house ready to rush Gunnar to the vet! I could not find any sign of a puncture wound on him and no swelling so I left them inside and went back out to investigate.
It turns out it was a bull snake and he was making a hissing noise when coiled that I mistook for a rattle. I am somewhat shaken up since on any other day I would not have been home and had it been a rattlesnake it might have turned out rather badly.
Funny thing is Gunnar has had snake eversion training a few years ago, but he was the first one to go after it. Hektor seemed to respect it a bit more but for all I know he had already gone after it before I went outside to see what the fuss was. Good news is noone has any wounds and the snake has since left the premises.
I am making appointments next week for the rattlesnake vacine!
